Ralink RT2500pci

Post by yvonneh »

Newbie here. I used Linux Mint 14 successfully on my Acer laptop then installed Mint 18.1(32bit) from a usb stick without problems. Now I can only get network access with an ethernet connection, also the usb ports are not available.

Network connections shows my wifi correctly and implies that it is running but it does not connect. The Disk manager shows the presence of my usb thumbdrive.

I have run all the Mint 18.1 updates and run Driver Manager which told me intel-microcode do not use this device so I defaulted to version 3.20170707.1-ubuntu 6.04.0. Also sl-modem-daemon gave do not use this device so I opted for version 2.911 - 20110321-12. No success.

The few posts I found on various forums suggested updated the ralink driver for the chipset but the only source rt2x00.serialmonkey.com is no longer available. Other suggestions were to keep Mint 18.1 but go back to the drivers from Mint 14. Can anyone explain in simple terms how I can achieve this?

Sorry, things deteriorated after I posted. On a reboot I couldn't even get the ethernet hard wire connection to function. I decided to re-install Mint 14.1 Nadia (both 16.1 Petra and 17.1 Rebecca won't install as the keyboard ceases to function when I try these installations).

I had hoped to re-install 18.1 Serena from my usb iso but now 14.1 Nadia won't boot from the usb drive (I have set the boot sequence to use the removable drive first, before the hard drive and cd rom drive). So I am stuck with Nadia 14.1 . At least the wifi and ehternet work as well as the usb port.

Below is the result from Mint 14 of the command you posted.

Now running with Mint 18.2 Sonya with Mate, still can only access via ethernet although my wifi connection is showing.
I have run level 1 and 2 updates. The driver manager indicates two unknown devices not working - intel-microcode (option use Version 20170707 - ubuntu 16.04.0) and sl-modem-daemon (option use Version 2.9.11 - 201103021-12) . I have selected options Do not use on both.

Is this a problem specific to the Ralink RT2500pci or a common issue?
