Linux offered me the Brother-HL4040 CN driver for this printer, and it is not working. The computer connects to the printer, and the printer puts out a red message that says to restart the printer when I send a test page.
A self-test request to the printer put out a message that says "If you can read this, you are using the wrong driver for your printer. " The message has this header:
userdict dup (/004)dvn{}put (/004\004)cvn{}put
It is a Canadian printer, and I assumed that the "CDN" distinguished it from the American "CN" version, and thus the CN driver would work. But it's not happening.
The printer is listed US Brother site, but only Win and Mac OS are listed as supported: http://support.brother.com/g/b/oslist.a ... 4040cdn_us Is it possible that there is some fix for it through the Linux community?
Please help!

Re: Brother-HL4040CDN printer driver needed
I think the D stands for 'duplex,' the ability for the printer to turn the page and print on both sides without user intervention.
Remove any current installation for the printer, then try following these instructions... BUT....
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/15
BUT use this download from brother rather than searching...
http://download.brother.com/welcome/dlf ... 2.1.1-1.gz
No guarantees. I did a quick search and someone reckoned this installer supported your printer. If it works, could you let us know and maybe ping an email to Brother so they update their website for the next guy?
Cheers

MintBean is correct. The letters at the end of the model number meanandy40 wrote:...I assumed that the "CDN" distinguished it from the American "CN" version...
olor, [D]uplex and [N]etwork.

After following all instructions to the letter, my Brother H-4040CDN now works perfectly even in duplexing mode and in color in my installation of Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon 16-bit.
Thank you so very much!!

After filling in all the pertinent info on the Brother Contact form, I sent them the following information, seeing I could find no better place to send it:
Thanks again! Please update your website at http://support.brother.com/g/b/oslist.a ... 4040cdn_us and elsewhere to indicate that this model of printer works with MintLinux 18.2, with the following driver:
http://download.brother.com/welcome/dlf ... 2.1.1-1.gz, following instructions found at https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/15
It works in duplex mode in B&W and color.
