[SOLVED] SD Card fails to mount after latest update

Post by altoid_mint »

EDIT: tl:dr the issue was that I updated the kernel, so I did a rollback to the previous version and the SD card reader worked fine.

Hello everyone. First time poster, long time fan of Linux. I'm running Linux Mint on a Lenovo 110S (64 bit) and recently performed an update to the system. Now the SD card reader doesn't read the SD card I have installed. Prior to the update, the SD card reader was working fine with the same SD card. I have looked for solutions and have been unsuccessful.

I found the driver, but don't know how to update it.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Re: SD Card fails to mount after latest update

Post by ClixTrix »

Note: I was originally thinking USB, but later spotted the Unclaimed device and added my thoughts at bottom of post.

Ususally, a microSD slot operates on USB Controller. Looking at your system specs, I'm going to guess it would be on the USB 3.0 Controller.

Looking at the lshw section on USB (I reposted it), I see 3 USB 2.0 devices (mouse, bluetooth, cam) and that probably leaves 1 open for an external USB 2.0 port. On the USB 3.0 Controller, I see nothing. I'm guessing the 1 USB 3.0 external port is there and working (you need to test that it is working) and the media controller for microSD is missing.

What kind of update(s) did you do?

Have you checked BIOS settings to see if the Controllers are enabled?

Let's double-check what USB devices are there by running the following command with an SD card in the microSD slot and please post back the results:

Code: Select all

lsusb
Could you please also run the following command and post back, so I and others can get a better idea of what you're running:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Edit:

I also see an SD Host Controller which could be the MIA microSD. That's the other possibility and maybe the more likely. It's showing as an "UNCLAIMED" device which makes me think Kernel level doesn't support or missing driver. Have you checked Driver Manager?

Interesting find on that Controller ......

https://askubuntu.com/questions/939410/ ... oesnt-show

If you installed Mint 18.2 with Kernel 4.8 and updated to 4.10 or newer, that could be the Answer. IF that's what you did, try going back to 4.8 Kernel for a test.

Looking at /var/log/apt/history.log I had the following updates applied prior to the issue arising:

Code: Select all

...I had been putting the update off. :(
Have you checked BIOS settings to see if the Controllers are enabled?
I have not. How do I do that?

It looks like I may have done just that. I'll look into how to revert the kernel and let you know my progress.

Re: SD Card fails to mount after latest update

So I looked at reverting the kernel and found the following post:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/375844/ ... -my-system

I used the following code to list my available kernels:

Code: Select all

dpkg -l linux-image*
Which returned the following:

Code: Select all

Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name           Version      Architecture Description
+++-==============-============-============-==================================
un  linux-image    <none>       <none>       (no description available)
ii linux-image-4. 4.10.0-40.44 amd64 Linux kernel image for version 4.1
ii linux-image-4. 4.8.0-53.56~ amd64 Linux kernel image for version 4.8
ii linux-image-ex 4.10.0-40.44 amd64 Linux kernel extra modules for ver
ii linux-image-ex 4.8.0-53.56~ amd64 Linux kernel extra modules for ver
I then reverted to the 4.8 kernel with the following command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge linux-image-4.10.0-40-generic
The kernel reverted and the microSD was instantly recognized. Now I just have to get the encryption worked out again, but that'll be a separate post. Thank you for helping me solve this issue. The Linux community is the best because of people like you who are willing to put in a bit of time and effort to help a stranger.
