Fan issue with new build

Post by FT277002 »

I built a new desktop with new hardware and decided to try running Linux Mint on it alone - no dual boot!
Hardware: Intel Core i5 8400 (gen 8), Gigabyte Z370 HD3 Mobo, Samsung 960 EVO M.2 NVMe SSD, Geforce GTX 1060, 16 GB PC 3000

Now the problem is, when I bring my computer out of sleep mode (suspend), the CPU fan (and case fan?) run at 100% speed, and WON'T STOP, forcing me to reboot. Normally the PC has been very quiet most of the time.
I have been through the Gigabyte BIOS, and have made a few changes to try and fix this, but nothing has worked so far. There aren't many settings that would appear to be a possible cause of this problem.
I have yet to update the BIOS - hesitant to do so. I sort of doubt that a newer BIOS will solve the problem because this version of Linux is older than my hardware.

It is worth noting that Gigabyte actually doesn't list Linux as an operating system that its motherboard supports, but so far Linux Mint has run OK apart from this fan issue. I am a capable problem solver, but this has me stuck because information on the web is lacking or difficult to find. Suggestions:?:

Please run the following command from Terminal and post back the results (both before the problem and after):

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
If you enter BIOS setup, Gigabyte normally for boards like ours (see my specs) has Fan Control Settings, and mine has a nice GUI screen to assist. How do you have yours set?

Thx for the reponse... the Gigabyte BIOS has a "Smartfan" Utility where you graphically (on a chart) set fan levels for CPU temperatures. It's a lot of information to list here.
I have tried loading BIOS defaults to make sure none of my changes caused the high fan speed coming out of sleep mode. No go. Guess I'll try updating the BIOS next.

The system information you wanted is as follows

Again, it is worth noting that this PC is whisper quiet until coming out of sleep mode. Haven't played any games yet that would stress the system, but will get around to that!

I noticed immediately that you are running a Coffee Lake CPU. Those are very new processors to Linux. Support for Coffee Lake was added in Kernel 4.13. You should be able to update to a 4.13 Kernel in Update Manager under "View" section.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/linux-ke ... 7606.shtml

The before and after shows me that the CPUs are idling and temps are low in both.

I also have the Smartfan 5 GUI. I believe I have my Speed Control set to Normal (Default). I tie my fan speeds to specific Monitor temps and the speeds adjust with method appropriate to the fan pins: 4-pin for the CPU uses PWM and Monitors CPU temp, 3-pin for my case fans uses Voltage and Monitors chipset. I believe those settings allow my motherboard to control fan speeds.

If you're doing similar, it could be BIOS problem. However, I'd at least give the Kernel update a try.

Solved

Thank you again for your support. I wasn't aware that the kernel upgrade was chosen as a separate item from a list in the upgrade manager. The upgrade to 4.13 fixed several issues for me, but it actually didn't fix the fan after sleep issue- a BIOS upgrade to F5 did. But I am relieved, liking Linux more. Now if only Steam supported Linux Mint, so I didn't have to fool around with Wine, that would fix just about everything for me... :)

I did see there were updates available to your BIOS, I just don't recommend them UNLESS there is cause. That would have been my next recommendation.

Glad that Kernel update yielded a good result too.

I know I've seen some posts on running Steam on Mint 18. Post that as a question over in Software/Apps and/or search for it.

I don't run Steam. My grandkids do.

It's been months now, but I wanted to add more info in case anyone does ever read this...
Basically, I found that changing BIOS settings (not sure which ones) actually appear to be the cause of the fan problem described above. If the BIOS is reset to defaults, the problem is not there and my PC is silent as it should be after sleep mode. (Fortunately, I did find that two very important BIOS settings changes could be made which didn't cause the issue - OC'd the RAM with XMP profile and set the fan profile to silent.)
So something with my z370 mobo hardware doesn't completely jive with Mint, but that's understandable. No problems occur with kernel updates; each one seems to make the PC faster and quieter. Very happy with Linux, not going back on this PC, donated some from my tax refund...
