not all speakers are being detected

I have an HP Envy 13-AD031ND and just installed Mint 18.2, updated it and noticed that the audio was very tinny. It turns out that the laptop has 4 speakers including 2 little tweeter type speakers underneath. Mint is using the little tweeters but not he main L/R speakers, hence the tinny audio.

It seems to not be aware of the main speakers. Can anyone help me to get all 4 of these speakers working?

In the gui Sound utility it only shows two speakers and I only have Analog Stereo Output available as an output profile.

Please install kernel update utility and with its help install latest kernel and test. After installing kernel you have to reboot for it to be active.

I updated to 4.14.4 It did not seem to have any effect on the audio though, still only the two tweeter speakers being used.

Anyone else got any ideas?

I checked the bios, nothing there, even wrote to realtek, nothing back from them yet, tried HP but they were predictably absolutely hopeless.

I tried a few other distros too hoping to find one that works and then to copy the driver from it that did not yield any useful results either.
