On my prior Debian 8.6 Cinnamon or MS OS when I plugged in my old FinePix camera via a mini USB to USB cable the camera was detected and easy options existed to download my photos. Now on Mint 18.2 I don't get any indication it even detects the camera. I just downloaded the photo on an old MS OS and all worked fine, so I know the camera does. Please provide any recommendations for resolving this issue.

does LM18.2 actually see the SD card that is in the Camera?.
- that's all that is really needed, as you can then use various programs,
to copy & collate the various photos.

Have you tried looking in "Places" or "Devices" with a file browser? Or are you expecting a pop-up alert, etc?

Thanks for your responses Flemur and Pierre. LM 18.2 doesn't detect the SD card or camera. I was expecting a file browser option to open the camera folder so I could copy the photos from the camera to the PC. I checked places but didn't see anything and didn't locate devices, when I searched for devices, the Driver Manager came up.

"Devices" and "Places" are poorly defined terms - see pic: What thunar (above) calls "Devices", "pcmanfm" lists as a sub-set of "Places".

Anyway, in thunar my camera showed up under "Devices" (the things shown in the picture are: two partitions on a USB drive, and a HD partition with no entry in /etc/fstab), but I never got any notification that a camera was attached - no popup of anything like that - and had to start thunar to see it there.

My camera didn't show up in the Devices section of the file manager and no Places section is displayed. I was able to download the photos on another PC with MS OS, so I know all is well with the camera. i do however get an audio beep that indicates that the PC detects another device connected to it, but fails to display it. Any other ideas how to resolve this issue please. Flemur I like your backgroud picture, a serious Dracula bite.

Are other users regularly see their cameras displayed in the File Manager under Places as detailed below by Flemur? Seems like this camera function should work easily like my old Debrian OS and MS OSs.

There are several things going on here. The first is the ability to detect an attached device, the second is to understand what the device is, the third is to know that there is some memory or data storage on that device, and the fourth to understand how to announce and display the information. All these factors vary between distros, for one, and the presence of software that may be used to deal with the factors.

I've had some cameras, especially, that didn't show up at all when plugged in, yet when the memory card was pulled and attached with a multi card reader, the memory card immediately showed up and a photo management software could be used. Then magically some months later for that same camera, everything just suddenly works. With cameras, especially, some very smart person needs to figure out what makes that device tick because the camera maker doesn't want to give up their hardware secrets. So the old guessing game/reverse engineering effort comes into play.

So I always keep a multi card reader handy just so i can pull a resident SD card or whatever and use the reader to talk to the computer - that always works.

What Desktop Environment are you using?

Please try plugging in the camera and then type the following command into the terminal dmesg -S | grep usb
This will search the logs for messages relating to usb devices.

Copy the output and post in code tags. It should give some pointers on what is happening.

I've used these commands when I couldn't get a camera to show up (in Arch, IIRC):
With NO camera connected I get: You might need to install "gphoto2".

For some strange reason, my Mint (18.3 Cinnamon) won't connect to my Nikon J5 unless the J5 is switched on and in view photos (playback) mode *before* plugging in the USB cable (at both ends). On the other hand, I can plug in my D5300 and then turn it on, and Mint finds it immediately (this doesn't work for the J5). I've no idea what's going on but now I know the rules it's not a problem!

Thank you all for your responses. There may well be different ways to resolve this issue depending on the device (camera) you are connecting to. Yeah ... Finally! Using the xD card slot on my ancient HP C6180 resulted in a pop up window in MInt 18.2 stating that I have just inserted a medium with digital photos, chose an application to launch. I chose Import with Pics. Problem resolved, some times the resolution is an easy one that is overlooked, I'm kind of embarrassed I didn't think of this.
