Linux Mint Mate 17.3 upgrade

Post by Mintster »

I have a HP 17-g121wm laptop
I could never get the graphics on Linux Mint Mate 18.3 to work. I could get it installed but couldn't a graphics driver working. Apparently flgrx was incompatible with X-Org.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04773111
1.8GHz up to 3.2GHz AMD Quad-Core A10-8700P APU
AMD Radeon R6 graphics with up to 4352MB total graphics memory
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Carrizo bus-ID: 00:01.0
Display Server: X.Org 1.19.5 drivers: ati,vesa (unloaded: fbdev,radeon)
Resolution: 1600x900@0.00hz
GLX Renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 5.0, 128 bits)
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 17.2.4 Direct Rendering: Yes

Last week I could not successfully upgrade the kernel on Linux Mint Mate 17.3 to 4.4 with the security upgrades.
So this past week I decided to give Ubuntu Mate 16.04 another try and it works! I was worried about support on 17.3 running out in 2019. So if you have a laptop like mine where AMD GPU-PRO doesn't work there is hope.

I suggest stick to it until LM 19 comes out and in few months. Then give that a try again.
