[Solved] Very slow file copy

Post by ablac » Mon Jan 15, 2018 3:13 pm

Save to everyone, I would like to ask why I never copy files from Linux Mint to a USB stick, the copying process is very slow and often gets hibernated for a long time.

A USB3 flash chip can easily manage 1GB/minute continuous write. Do a quick test on your stick maybe? Copy a 1GB file to it and time it start-to-finish.

I think the progress bar often causes a false perception of transfer speed because it seems to fill rather quickly to about 70% then shows little progress while the file is being written. This is often interpreted as 'hanging'.
My understanding is that the file is buffered before actual writing takes place and this accounts for the initial filling of the progress bar.
usb 2 will be slower

copying does actually fill the cache first off,, which thus gives the illusion of Great Speed,
but, after that initial rush,, then it's a snails pace in comparison.

- fallen for that trick, myself.

Capisco, quindi è solo una falsa percezione. Grazie a tutti per la spiegazione.
