Hey all. I tried googling my issue but found no results for the past few days.
My issue is whenever I connect an hdmi cord from my laptop to an external monitor, my OS immediately freezes. I cannot move the mouse or use any keys. I can't even adjust my screen brightness. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Linux MyPC 4.4.0-109-generic #132-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jan 9 19:52:39 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
GPU:
NVIDIA-SMI 384.111 Driver Version: 384.111
(Laptop also has intel integrated graphics)

Are there any BIOS settings on the laptop to select which GPU is used instead of Optimus?

My laptop has intel integrated graphics and a nvidia chip. It uses the integrated graphics by default and I can setup certain programs to use the nvidia gpu. I don't have any BIOS settings other than defaults.
