Desktop Won't Suspend

Post by bug67 »

I recently inherited a Dell T1600 workstation. It is leaps and bounds better than my old desktop!

Anyhow, the only issue I'm having with it is, it will not enter suspend. I have screen locker set to enter after 5 minutes of inactivity and screen blank and suspend at 30 minutes. If I "sudo su pm-suspend&" it enters suspend and then, immediately wakes up. I've taken a look at the BIOS settings and I'm fairly certain there's nothing in there that would cause this issue. I am at a loss. Usually, this kind of thing only happens to me on Windows.

Same thing. Enters suspend then, immediately wakes up.

I am using xeon workstations around the same vintage, but these are still on 17.3 and Mate.
You could try disabling wake on lan in your bios.
Is there a later kernel available?

Wake on lan is/was disabled.
I'm running 4.13.0-32-generic which is the latest one offered in the update manager.

Thinking a BIOS update may help? The machine is running version A12 with A17 being the latest. However, having followed the instructions here:

https://www.dell.com/support/article/us ... UpdateBIOS

I am unable to boot to the FreeDOS USB that it instructed me to make so, it appears I cannot update my BIOS that way. I am at a loss.

do you still have a win partition? The bios update utility within a running win may work.
Flashing the bios may not solve the issue but is always good to have the latest available.

No. This was a decommissioned workstation from my wife's employer. I received it to use as a Linux only machine. I haven't run Windows on anything in years. I say that because, some of the stuff I've been reading says if I can boot to a Windows repair disk, I can then use command prompt to target the BIOS .exe and run it from there. However, having not run Windows in years, I don't have anything laying around any longer. Used to be you could download a Win7 repair iso. I don't think that's an available option any more.

Sure would like this thing 100%.

bug67, try toying around / tweaking the bios settings first to get the FreeDOS usb stick to boot (maybe it needs Legacy enabled?) You could also use HirenBootCD alternatively with the .exe provided by Dell...

I'd also try checking the logs with journalctl at the time right after the suspend-and-instant-resume happens...maybe that will reveal if there is something in specific that wakes it up. Also, Intel literally has a crapload of instructions for debugging such issues (i won't pretend however that i understand each & everyone of them). Don't forget as well that it might 'just' be a kernel bug to be resolved in some future update...

Thanks for the suggestions. The BIOS is in legacy mode.

Here is my plan going forward:

-Download and burn a copy of Windows evaluation and do a full windows install on a completely separate HDD (having removed the drive Mint is on)
-Update BIOS from within Window.
-Remove Windows HDD/replace with Mint HDD.

Still have no idea weather this will solve my suspend issue but, I am of the opinion that I need to eliminate the possibility that BIOS is the issue. Might not have time to do this today but I will at some point and will report back.

Please continue to provide suggestions if any.

Got an evaluation copy of Windows 7 installed to a separate HDD and ran the BIOS installer. It didn't take. Tried incremental updates as well to no avail. During all of this, I've noticed that I am not getting the Dell boot splash that I should be getting. In order to even get into the BIOS, I had to borrow an old PS/2 keyboard. My USB keyboard isn't recognized until after post.

So, at this point, I think this machine has bigger issues than just suspend. I do believe they are related though. Shame because, other than the suspend thing, everything works superbly! Probably the best specked desktop I've ever owned.

I got my BIOS updated but, it didn't do any good. Still wakes up immediately upon suspend. In an effort to narrow down the cause, I followed this thread:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/148481/ ... ibernation

Changing items (in my case EHC1, EHC2, GLAN and PS2K from enabled to disabled) didn't work.

The next thing I did was try to find out what's waking up the machine:

cat /var/log/syslog returns:

Code: Select all

Re: Desktop Won't Suspend

Post by bug67 »

Still trying to figure this out. Here's a list of things I've tried since my initial post:
  • Updated to the latest BIOS
  • Ensuring wake on lan is disabled in BIOS
  • Disabling my network adapter altogeather
  • Updating the kernel
  • Making sure my 3rd party drivers are good
  • Disabling acpi USB ports that were enabled in accordance with this thread
  • Switched my "S" states around in BIOS (tried all the possible combos)
  • Switched processor "C" state on and off again
  • Turned off "Require password on resume." Read that that used to cause suspend issues in MInt.
Anyhow, I don't seem to be getting anywhere.
