Recommendations for 4TB 3.5" SATA III hard drive?

Post by jimallyn » Fri Feb 02, 2018 9:37 pm

Greetings, fellow Minters. I have filled up my 2TB hard drive, and am in the market for a 4TB drive for my desktop computer. 3.5 inch, SATA III, probably 7200 RPM as that seems to be as fast as they come. Haven't really been keeping up in the hard drive field. Anybody have a recommendation? Doesn't have to be a specific model, if there are brands that are typically good and brands that I should stay away from, that would be helpful, too. Looking online, I see drives with warranties ranging from 1 year to 5 years. I will probably buy something with a 3 to 5 year warranty, definitely not a drive with a 1 year warranty. What do you say?

Hi Jim,

I've had good experiences with Western Digital.

Here's one of the drives that I have https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6822236622

A 6TB isn't that much more expensive.

Good luck

I've had good experiences with Crucial drives. As far as I can remember, I've only had one drive fail on me, and that was the hard drive that originally came with my first computer back in 2000 (which was a Gateway), so it probably wasn't a Crucial drive.

I've been using HGST drives for years, without any problems, on desktops and laptops. HGST is owned by WesternDigital.

I use only Toshiba drives. My current rig has 10 x 4TB drives.

I am using 4 Seagate Barracudas. A pair of 1 gigabyte and a pair of 2 gigabyte. My drives run 24/7 with very few shut downs and the temperatures never exceed 110 F. They each have a limited 3 year warranty and come in ranges up to 8 terabytes. The 4's start out at around $99 US at Newegg.

It's maybe worth having a look on the Backblaze website before you "flash the cash " .

Those folks are running over 60,000 spinners , 24 hours a day , 365 days a year , across a wide range of brands ,
and they publish all of their stats .

Hard to imagine anyone having a better pool of data to draw from :)

WD red. Just go with slower nas drive. My media plays just fine from one through router over 2.4ghtz bandwidth. If you do back ups to this drive, nas drives handle multiple read/writes better than desktop drives.
