New scanner not recognised [SOLVED]

Hi Guys,
Silver Surfer (geriatric) needs help again.
Bought an Epson XP-342 Printer with scanner and photo copier.
Printer Prints from Libra Office OK.
Want to be able to scan, docs and photos, and even do OCR scanning if poss.
Have tried Skanlite but it doesn’t find my new Printer (Switched On)
Have installed SANE & XSANE, printer still not recognized.
However, Gimp now shows XSANE in the FILE>CREATE,but does not find Printer.
Would appreciate some help in “Simple terms” please!

Hi again,

There is a normally a download package at Epson that installs the scanner driver and software. The other two (or three for some printers) are the printer driver and printer utility. I know from your prior post you've successfully installed those two, the printer driver and utility.

I checked for your printer. The package is marked as All-In-One on the list. When you select it, you'll go to an accept page that includes both the package and a download Image Scan manual PDF (instructions in English and Japanese). They also give you an online manual link. The package page has a specific selection for Linux Mint 18(LTS) and the AMD64. The download is a zipped (.qz) file that should also contain install instructions and the folders/files. The instructions are generally step-by-step for your connection, i.e. USB, wired/wireless. Make sure you read through and ask questions on anything that is a problem or needs clarification before you proceed. Install of the scanner isn't quit as easy as the printer in some cases.

Epson provides their utility, Image Scan, with the install. I use it all the time to move business documents to PDF for storage. Linux Mint also has Simple Scan available for install. There is probably an OCR plugin in the Epson package too.

Edit: I'll be around this weekend, but in and out helping a friend (with Mint system) and also have my grandson here. Yep, I'm in my mid-60's. If I'm not around, there might be some helpful posts in the Printers and Scanners section of the Forum. There are some stickies there including Epson All-In-One.

Thanks for your response. A couple of questions:-
Downloaded the “Manual” and read through it. Don’t understand a lot of it! However...
1 What does (LTS) in "Linux Mint (LTS)" mean or indicate.
2.Should I download Linuxmint 18(LTS) option, or Debian 8 or Debian 9. I know Linuxmint is based on Debian.
I'll deal with my Asus 64bit Laptop first, then presumably I will have to download 32bit options for my Acer Laptop

As a Linux novice, all looks very complicated. All my previous computer knowledge is all M$ based.
Am very appreciative of your help, and your time.
Happy to have a go, once I’m sure I’m using the right software download.

In reading your post, it doesn't appear you changed the directory to where you downloaded the file in Terminal, e.g.

If you're installing USB, there is an opt-out for not installing the network plugin. It's a little farther down the instructions from what you posted. Syntax is usually....

Terminal seems to stop at this point, unless anything is going on in the background I don't know about.. (I do find Linux very often, doesn't show "Please wait messages" when it is busy)

Nothing seems to work anything differently as regards scanning.
I open “Image scan” but it doesn’t find my Printer. Nor do any of the other scan apps

My XP-342 Printer is connected via Wifi and prints OK for libreOffice documents.

Using the scanner to get items into the computer will have to remain a dream!! unless anyone got any other ideas.

Problem is- As a novice to Linux I don’t know what I’m doing!
I can install stuff via Synaptic Software manager, but trying to do the same via Terminal, I can follow instructions, but if the instructions don’t do anything, I’ve no idea how to discover why.

Sequentially.....and wait until complete in Terminal.

1. Run the cd Downloads (that changes to the download folder)

2. Run the unpack using the tar xaf imagescan-bundle-linuxmint-18-1.3.25.x64.deb.tar.gz

3. Run the cd imagescan-bundle-linuxmint-18-1.3.25.x64.deb (that changes to the new unpacked folder)

4. Run the ./install.sh (that installs the packages including network support)

It looks like it might have all run correctly. If you intend to install "network", then you need to follow the instructions for install of network-based scanner.

If you downloaded the ImageScan manual, look for the section "Setting Network Plug-in". Generally, the scanner installs as Epson, Epson2, or epkowa. If you don't see the reference file epkowa, try Epson2 for the change. Where it talks about using root privileges, you need to use sudo with editor on the file.

Did I mention that scanner install can be a little problematic.

Left this running for many minutes, nothing more seems to happen from third line up from bottom of the above. If "Enter" is pressed the last line is repeated. Printer is still not recognised.

Hi Lanser Tried your suggestion and downloaded Vuescan and installed. When program opens it also cannot find Printer/scanner. which is strange as it works in Wifi from LibreOffice OK

If the installer completed correctly (and it appears it did), you need to go to the section of the manual for network install to complete setup (see my last post).

In general, you modify one of the epson configuration files (see last post) to match the network location of your printer. Normally, it's to provide the printers IP address in your network although an automatic detect is also possible from settings.

Have tried to follow your instructions.
Keep coming up against:- bash:" ./install.sh: No such file or directory"
although I have believed I had installed it from the download.
You ask if I have read the manual. I assume this is the"Readme doc" that comes with the Download and is copied here below in italics.
I had hoped installing software to make my Printer/Scanner work fully, could have been handled by a single Download App, or Synaptic file manager
Unfortunately all this following "Terminal language" needed to do it, is beyond me as a Linux novice.

I very much appreciate your trying to help, but it looks like I'll have to abandon the idea, and hope perhaps my old HP Printer/Scanner, may work with Linux

The "networkscan" plugin is installed by default because all supported
EPSON scanners and all-in-ones support access via a (wireless) network
connection.

The OCR Engine is also non-free and optional. To prevent this plugin
from getting installed use the ``--without-ocr-engine`` option. Doing
so will disable support for automatic document rotation.

Note that tesseract-3.03 or later can be used as a free alternative.

Troubleshooting
---------------

While the ``install.sh`` script is expected to work as intended in the
vast majority of scenarios it might not work as intended for you. If
that is the case, please pay attention to the error messages in the
output that is produced. That should help you find a workaround by
yourself or in the list below.

No permission/privileges to install
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is likely to give messages that include phrases such as ``are you
root?``, ``Root privileges are required`` and ``you need to be root``
(possibly in your language). The ``install.sh`` script assumes that
you can use ``sudo`` to obtain ``root`` status. If that is not the
case the install will fail. You can try

::

su -c './install.sh'

and provide the ``root`` password in this case. If you want to use
the ``--without-network`` option, make sure to put it inside the
quotes.

Note, however, that many distributions disable ``root`` logins these
days and instead set up the first user account created during initial
installation so that it can obtain ``root`` status via ``sudo``. If
that is not your account, get the owner of that account to install the
bundle.

Package conflicts
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

There is a small chance that the scanner bundle requires other
software to be installed that conflicts with software you have already
installed. Before you can install the scanner bundle, you will need
to resolve any such conflicts.

The straightforward way is simply to remove any conflicting software
that is already installed. Your package manager may suggest ways to
resolve the conflict that are less drastic, though.

Package manager or ``apt-get`` command not found
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The ``install.sh`` script assumes that you have one of the common
higher level package managers for RPM or Debian packages installed.
It also assumes that the binary packages in the bundle are in the
package format that your distribution expects.

In the unlikely case that no supported package manager is available
you can still install manually using the low-level package managers
``rpm`` or ``dpkg``. First run

::

./install.sh --dry-run

and note the list of ``.rpm`` or ``.deb`` files that shows. You can
use the ``--without-network`` option with the above command if you
wish. Next, try to install those packages with one of

::

rpm --install $list_of_rpm_files
dpkg --install $list_of_deb_files

This will likely fail due to missing dependencies. In case you used
``rpm``, then install all of the required packages that are mentioned
in the error output using your regular software installation method
and run the same command again. This time it ought to succeed.

After a failed ``dpkg``, first remove the failed packages.

::

dpkg --remove $list_of_packages

Note this requires the package names listed at the end of the error
message, *not* the package files you used to install. Once removed,
you can use your regular software installation method to install any
missing dependencies and run the ``dpkg --install`` command again.

Of course, all ``rpm``, ``dpkg`` and ``apt-get`` invocations require
``root`` privileges. Use ``sudo`` or ``su -c`` to obtain them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Very unlikely to happen but if it does, install ``util-linux`` and try
again.

No, the install phase is done. You're now looking to customize the install. The ImageScan manual is in the bundle that was extracted. However, Epson also has an online version. Go to the section on Setting Network Plug-in.

Your customization needs to modify the file /etc/imagescan/imagescan.conf so that the scanner is seen by ImageScan.

In order to get it correct, need to know the IP network address of your scanner, e.g. 192.168.1.100

Got your message. Here are the steps and code for you. You can go to that prior posted webpage and section to follow what I'm doing.

1) Run the following command from terminal. That will require password entry. You are launching the editor on the imagescan.conf file.

2) Copy and paste the following code section to to the bottom of the imagescan.conf file.

3) The IP address for your printer replaces the xxx.xxx.xxx in that new code section. Locate and replace with your IP.

4) Save and Exit editor and Exit Terminal

5) Reboot System

6) Launch ImageScan -- The Printer should now show in the Drop-Down list at the top of the ImageScan window.

As an example of what the imagescan.conf file looks like after the change. Here's mine for my Epson WF-2760. Hopefully, this example helps clarify what you need. The added code is in RED. If the commented lines with ; or # are a little different in your file, that shouldn't matter.
