Hello,
I've attached an inxi.odt file for the system I'm running Mint 18.2 on.
Problem is that a straight start of Mint will yield a badly distorted display indicating that there is probably a wrong graphics driver. However, if I boot while pressing Esc and then choose the upstart version of the kernel, all is well.
How do I find the proper driver [assuming that's the problem] for my machine? Is it possible to just boot directly using the upstart kernel without having to use Esc?
BTW despite the Atom chipset on this machine, Mint runs remarkably well. Able to repurpose from XP which makes me happy.
Thanks very much,
Bill Cole

Wrong desktop: too heavy for that old weak box. Select the lightweight Xfce edition of Mint 18.3. Clean installation.

Re: Asus 1005HA Graphics Driver Problem?
I'm curious if the following package is installed. Check Software Manager and look for the following package.
xserver-xorg-video-intel
This post at Ubuntu got me looking (last post on the thread). If I'm not mistaken, that laptop has the 1024x600 screen and the old atom chipset.

Edit: Oh, and I do agree with Pjotr that Xfce might be a better choice.

Thank you all for your input.
I do have the xserver-xorg-video-intel package installed. Will take your advice on Mint Xfce and try that out.
Appreciate your taking the time to respond. Very grateful.
