AMD CPUs and Spectre

Post by steveis2 » Mon Feb 05, 2018 7:13 pm

Is it likely that AMD will issue microcode updates for Linux that will help deal with the Spectre security issue? If they do then it would help people whose motherboard manufacturers are not going to issue any BIOS update. If they don't then there would not be a way to mitigate, in part at least, the Spectre issue if you don't get a BIOS update. And lots of people probably won't get a BIOS update because their hardware is deemed 'too old' by the manufacturers even though in all other respects it might work perfectly.

Probably. Though I doubt that they'll issue that for "old" CPU's. Intel for example, has already spoken about a 10 year limit.

Note that Spectre, which is the only thing that AMD has to deal with, is less dangerous than Meltdown, which is Intel-only.
