Nvidia Optimus issues

Post by polaris6933 » Thu Feb 08, 2018 8:57 am

I have an Asus N752 with Nvidia Optimus (GTX950M and Core i7-6700HQ, kernel 4.13.0-16, Mint 18.3.) and I encountered a weird issue with Nvidia settings: when I run it I get an error message and only a handful of the options that should be available are actually there. Now, what's actually weird is that Prime Profiles says the currently selected profile is Intel and I've had a multitude of issues trying to run my laptop using the Intel GPU on a variety of Linux distros. On Mint, specifically, with profile set to Intel I couldn't get past the login screen and while stuck at it one of the fans in my laptop would start sppinning like crazy.

Also, the actual reason I need the nvidia settings is so I can enable Composition Pipeline because I have screentear issues.

Did you install Bumblebee for Linux Optimus support?

I suffered something like this. Although I installed and selected Nvidia driver in Driver Manager, Mint was loading Nouveau driver instead again and again. Please, verify that Nvidia driver is active. Try "lsmod |grep nvidia" and then "lsmod | grep nouveau" in Terminal. The one that returns data will be the driver you are really loading.

Oddly enough, both "lsmod | grep nvidia" and "lsmod | grep nouveau" returned nothing. Driver manager, however, says I'm using nvidia drivers form my GPU and of the two options for the CPU the selected one is "Do no update the CPU microcode (the other one being "Intel-microcode"). I do not use bumblebee, I tried it previously (possibly on a different installation) and had issues with it.

Bumblebee provides the Optimus equivalent switching between the integrate Intel GPU and the discreet nVidia GPU. Without it, you can potentially use one or the other (not both). Folks that opt-out of Bumblebee use BIOS to select one or the other (if the option exists). Do you have any BIOS options?

The reason for no nVidia driver loaded is you're stuck in Intel GPU mode....which seems to agree with your original post.

FYI.....the dual-GPU is a power-saving method. If you can and do switch in BIOS to nVidia, you'll probably experience faster battery drain and some heating of the GPU that might cause any fan to run high.

I don't have those BIOS options unfortuantely.

Then, you're stuck with Intel only GPU mode without Bumblebee.
