[SOLVED] Bad performance Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.3

Post by mrflash3 »

Hello,

I need your help. I just installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.3, but the graphical experience is a little bit bad. Dragging windows(especially with Google Chrome) is pretty laggy. Also, from time to time, it seems like my cursor freezes for a second and after that continue to work normally. User experience, in comparison to Windows 10, is worse, I am a very big fan of Linux Mint so this situation makes me sad. Here is the inxi -Fszr output:

I applied intel-microcode driver from driver manager(I don't not if I should do that) and I checked 'Disable compositing for full-screen windows' from Preferences->General menu, but there is no difference.

Does anyone has the advice on what I could try? I really hope that there is some solution for this situation.

All the best and have a nice day :)

I would update the BIOS on that laptop to most current (instead of the Intel microcode update).

Then, try update to latest 4.13 kernel with all service from Update Manager applied. The old 4.10 Kernel you have is no longer receiving patches/updates.

Thank you so much for the reply!

I didn't realized that. Is there any simple way to update bios using Linux Mint? I did that only on Windows system, so I don't want to break something :D

You need to following BIOS update instructions from the manufacturer/Dell at their download site.

Thank you sooo much, you are amazing!

I did everything you said, updated bios version to the latest 1.18.5 and kernel to 4.13 version. I also updated all of the drivers from driver manager, and the performance is so much better! It is still a little bit laggy in situation where I have one window over another(especially when I have my browser opened and open files window for example), so I need to find a way to fix that, but still this is a very big improvement, thank you again! :)

From the release notes https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_sylvia_cinnamon.php
If your Intel GPU is recent enough (2007 or newer) it is recommended to remove the legacy Intel driver "xserver-xorg-video-intel" and to use the built-in modesetting driver instead:

Code: Select all

apt remove xserver-xorg-video-intel
sudo reboot
Not only will the modesetting fix the freeze issue when changing resolutions, it should also work better with Cinnamon and produce better performance.
Remove the intel driver as explained and use the built in modesetting driver with your hardware.

I removed xserver but I don't see any progression, actually now is a little bit worse because, I see that it has periods when it is pretty laggy, it lasts some time and after that it returns to normal. That situation repeats every once in awhile. So now I don't know what to do :/

I don't know if that is the problem, my laptop has 8GB DDR4 ram memory, 256GB SSD and Intel I5 6300U, in my opinion it would be strange if that isn't enough to run Linux Mint normally with effects. Windows 10 worked without any problem, and I think Windows 10 is more hardware demanding, right? :/

You're absolutely right. But it's a practical workaround nevertheless.... Until the fixed kernel with the right graphical driver arrives (you'll probably need the 4.14 or even the 4.15 kernel series).

I ended up installing Linux Mint 18.3 KDE, because there everything works pretty great out of the box. It is a shame because Cinnamon is my favorite flavor of Linux Mint, but never mind, I will wait until new kernel is released and test that. Thank you all for you effort, it was really helpful :)

All the best and have a nice day :)
