Nvidia 390.25 completely breaks Cinnamon (LM18.3)

Hi all,

I updated my Nvidia binary driver from the PPA to 390.25 and after a reboot, I couldn't even boot into Cinnamon. All I was getting was black screen and a mouse cursor that I could move around but not much else. After getting into shell, I ran nvidia-xconfig and re-generate xorg.conf file and then managed to get Cinnamon desktop. However, everything was slow and my graphics card's fan (GFX 1070) was spinning much louder than usual. When I played a video inside of Chromium, the screen was tearing like mad. Scrolling was incredibly choppy. It's as if I didn't have graphics hardware acceleration. And when I opened Cinnamon's main menu while the video was playing, the video would become choppy.

Only when I downgraded to 387-series driver did things become normal again.

Has anyone experienced issues with 390 driver or is it just me?

it runs perfectly on my maxwell card gtx 980m
i cant speak for pascal since there are no way for me to test it unless dell release their proprietary gpubox driver for linux

I'm getting the same issue but with an Nvidia GTX 1050 and with nvidia-384.111 drivers that I tried to install that was recommended by the driver manager. 'm running on a Skylake LGA1151 build with a Gigabyte B150M-HD3 mobo and an ASUS 2GB 1050 (non-Ti).

I'm typing this from my second installation attempt at trying linux mint and I don't know what else to do next. Honestly terrified to do anything at this point. I don't even get a cursor on the screen. I get nothing, nada, only a reboot does anything and because Linux Mint has decided in their infinite wisdom to hide the grub bootloader I cannot even get that up, I hold down shift and nothing happens either, I had to use boot-repair just to get grub to load up and that done nothing at all for this problem. I even set nosetmode and removed the grub hide inside of the boot repair tool. A complete reinstall and choosing not to install the nvidia driver via driver manager is the only way I'm able to talk to you right now.

Also why does Linux Mint or Linux in general always try to push the highest resolution possible? I'm using a television for a screen which supports 4K at 30Hz but not 4K at 60Hz and under windows the graphics card supports 4K 60Hz but the monitor does not. Linux Mint by default (with the nouveau driver) sets it for 3840x2160 @ 24Hz. is linux forcing my display to 4K at 60Hz with the nvidia driver? because that won't work. Is that why I cannot see anything at all? I'm going to have to find a way to get it to do 1920x1080 @ 60Hz, I've managed to set the resolution to 1920x1080 but its stuck at 24Hz which looks like the mouse cursor is having a seizure. So eventually I want it to be able to be set for 1920x1080 at 60Hz.

Do I download the linux nvidia driver binary from the nvidia.com website and install those or what? Even if I did that and it sucessfully installed, if it doesn't do 1920x1080 @ 60Hz or 3840x2160 at 30Hz (at most) I won't be able to see a damn thing and won't be able to continue to use Linux mint unless I pull out an old monitor and "repair" the system that way. Which sounds like a massive pain to me. I shouldn't have to do that.

Is thats whats going on? with a refresh rate that isn't supported!?

This is my first time trying out Linux Mint and I've been trying out Linux distributions every now and again eversince Debian Potato, I'm not a dummie but this is honestly furiating.

Drivers. Only 387 and 384 work perfectly. If I pick 390, nothing works well.

I posted a warning about this a couple of days ago but unless it were pinned and read or developers somehow block the 390.25 driver you would have upgraded anyway from PPA and then come to forums.

Maybe try searching the Vlc VideoLan Forum page for suggestions. I was searching for all kinds of difficult options on the linuxmint forum and in the end I just had to change the video output in my Vlc settings. And gone was the screen tearing and choppiness.

I have a Nvidia Geoforce graphics card, but never chose to use it in LinuxMint. Better performance without it. I have got smooth video now with LinuxMint Cinnamon 18.3. on local videos and on youtube videos.

I just had to disable the Hardware Accelerated Video Output (Overlay) and I did this too in Firefox (Preferences-General-Performance)
That is one setting found in the Video settings of Vlc and one setting in Firefox.
Takes 2 minutes to try it out. Be aware that for changes to take place in Vlc Mediaplayer you must save changes first and close program second. Then start Vlc up again to test if the change has had ANY effect. Otherwise Vlc doesnt change its settings.

Another advice I read on VideoLan Forum was to change the video output to ANY other than the current one.
Maybe just experiment, or try VideoLan Forum.

If you disable HW acceleration, your CPU will be doing everything and your battery life will be halved.

Just don't run 390.25 driver. It's an absolute mess.
