Linux Mint 18.3 and Ryzen 5 1600X plus NVidia GTX 1050 Ti

I am having trouble installing Linux Mint 18.3 on my new machine. As mentioned in the title the machine is equipped with an AMD Ryzen 1600X, an NVidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, and an MSI B350 PC MATE. I downloaded the standard Linux Mint 18.3 ISO, put it as usual onto an USB stick with the dd command and then load that at boot for the installation. At the boot of the live system I get the usual grub options for booting but then, after choosing the standard path, I get stuff on the screen that is barely readable and the system hangs itself up, preventing me from entering any setup screen.

I tried it with Ubuntu 16.04 eventually heading into the same error, though Ubuntu 17.10 works well. I'd prefer Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon though. I suspect a kernel error preventing any Ubuntu 16.04 derivative (such as Linux Mint 18.3) from working correctly. Can someone confirm that? Ryzen was added after the release of 16.04, so that might be the reason for that.

Now, assuming I'm right with the kernel thing, I'd still like to use Linux Mint 18.3 on this machine. Is there any way to accomplish this? Any workaround? Or is it possible to update the kernel version to a newer one directly on the ISO?
