Will LM 18.3 see a 4.15 kernel to fix AMD HDMI sound?
Will LM 18.3 see a kernel 4.15 to solve the AMD HDMI sound problem, or do user need to go upstream?

Mint has not tested and released 4.15 kernel yet. You'd have to find it via some other means, But Warning it may break the system.
You can get it from here http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/201 ... inux-mint/
But they have this warning on the page:

Re: Will LM 18.3 see a 4.15 kernel to fix AMD HDMI sound?
This is only a test machine to get off of LM17.3 in the future. I've been reading the ubuntuhandbook page. I clicked on "Download Kernel 4.15 (.deb)" and was reading. I'm looking at 64-bit generic. It looks like the 6 patches listed at the top are already applied to the binary packages below. Does Linux Mint apply additional patches or modules? Can I view them, if so where? It's an interesting path the kernel takes from debian, to ubuntu, to linuxmint. I wish I understood it betterkc1di wrote: ⤴Thu Feb 22, 2018 5:14 pm Mint has not tested and released 4.15 kernel yet. Re: Will LM 18.3 see a 4.15 kernel to fix AMD HDMI sound?
Mint's kernels come directly from the Ubuntu repositories and for 18.x are the 16.04 LTS kernel (4.4) and the HWE / HWE Edge kernels (4.8, 4.10, 4.11, 4.13). Of these only 4.4 and 4.13 are currently supported. Mint also get the HWE Edge kernels.
More info on LTS, HWE and HWE Edge here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/RollingL ... ementStack
This page gives an overview of the support schedule for 16.04 and thus Mint 18. You'll note that 4.15 is scheduled to make an appearance as an HWE kernel from Aug 18. I'd expect it to be available as an HWE Edge kernel somewhat earlier - probably April/May. 4.15 is expected to be the LTS kernel for 18.04 and Mint 19

Re: Will LM 18.3 see a 4.15 kernel to fix AMD HDMI sound? [Solved]
Just a quick update. I installed the 64-bit, generic 4.15 kernel from here: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.15/.
I had to install libelf-dev. I got an error regarding ndiswrapper, similar to the one mentioned here: Linux Kernel 4.13.0-25 Errors. I ignored it. The kernel did install and I do have amd hdmi sound.
Thanks for the links. I'm going to do some reading to hopefully understand this process better.

Ditto, and I'd disable high level updates in Update Manager right now if I were you.

Re: Will LM 18.3 see a 4.15 kernel to fix AMD HDMI sound?
thanks for the link, but ive been there already and tried to install from there and got the error mesg. then i went threw synaptic package manger and it said it got installed ? like i said it shows the green ck marks like it should be there but grub doesn’t show and my kernel is still 4.13.
im sure you can tell im a not up on my linux skills.. i love the system even thou my terminal skill aren’t up to par.
this is a fresh install of 18.3 on this drive.. my other drive is running 18.3 also but i have to use the 4.9.15+ kernel from when i was running 17.3 with alot of upgrades ending with 18.3 to give me sound out of my hdmi cable. im sure if other people can get sound, its most likely its my UN-knowlage of linux sys. skills.
i wonder if it would be best to wait for the 4.15 or the 4.16 kernel to be available threw update manger? but this is a fresh install n if i use it as a learning platform i don’t mind re installing when i crash..haha! tiring to learn linux is kinda addicting.. so im open for any help..thanks..

Re: Will LM 18.3 see a 4.15 kernel to fix AMD HDMI sound?
Did you get both linux-image... AND linux-headers...?
Re: Will LM 18.3 see a 4.15 kernel to fix AMD HDMI sound?
You cannot just copy and paste what is on How to Install Linux Kernel 4.15 in Ubuntu / Linux Mint.
Click on the button "Download Kernel 4.15 (.deb)" and you'll notice there are no "201801282230" there, there are "201802011154". And then select the appropriate linux-headers _all and generic, and the linux-image generic.
See my previous message for additional info.
For example, to get the compiled binary kernel for 64-bit:

Re: Will LM 18.3 see a 4.15 kernel to fix AMD HDMI sound?
Yes.
First I installed each deb separately (not the *.deb).
I ran into 2 issues though, and had to do further research.
1. I had to also install libelf-dev. See: https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/10059179/
2. I got an error regarding ndiswrapper. See: viewtopic.php?t=261347
Please be careful. Make sure you make a backup of your entire system.
