Desktop: Cinnamon 3.6.7 Distro: Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia
I am a completely green newbie and loaded Mint on my Sony Vaio laptop but could not figure out how to get my backlit keyboard to work. I found the solution on another post from 2012 and just want to share here in case anyone else is encountering the same issue. Credit for the fix is at this link:

Permanent solution (always on when you boot):
echo "options sony-laptop kbd_backlight=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/sony-laptop
So I copied this line, opened a terminal window and copied the command into it, hit enter and rebooted my PC. Backlit keyboard works like a champ. So happy to resolve this!
