[SOLVED]Mint won't read internal optical drive

Post by Gerstacker » Sun Mar 04, 2018 4:23 am

Hi guys!

Did a check yesterday on the terminal and it doesn't seem to be reading the 256GB SSD M.2 PCIe NVMe, which it treats like an external mountable volume for some reason.

This is a rig I cleaned out the Windows 10 from and replaced entirely with Sylvia manually partitioning the optical drive into 3:

1. 50GB "/" for the OS
2. 190GB "/home" for data
3. 16GB swap area

See for yourself what "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" produced:

It does see the drive:

Code: Select all

Drives: HDD Total Size: NA (-) ID-1: /dev/nvme0n1 model: N/A size: 256.1GB
If you as root in a terminal run fdisk on the drive ( /dev/nvme0n1 ) what does it show for partitions?

When you say "optical drive" do you mean "SSD"?

2. 190GB "/home" for data

Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

ODD vs HDD...

50GB for / is overkill. You can see it yourself per above:
Partition: ID-1: / size: 46G used: 6.3G (15%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/nvme0n1p1.
I'd say 10-12GB would be more than enough for 99% of common users...say maybe 20gb if somehow you still feel uncertain about it.

16GB swap area: that's also overkill, since your memory is 7573.8MB. I'd set it to 8gb...or if you wanna over do it, maybe say 10gb.
Opinions may vary / differ on that matter, but setting it to double the memory size is certainly a waste of space on a 256gb drive...

Thanks a ton for the help guys.

I understand now that this "mountable" meshugaas is simply how Linux deals with the internal optical drives.

I reformatted the system and now have a 12GB partition for LMCS18.3, 8GB for swap, and the remaining ~236GB to play around with.

All's good!
