LM18.3 | NVIDIA G96GLM/Quadro FX 770M | can't get nvidia-340 driver to take

Post by pomptondrive » Wed Mar 07, 2018 7:57 pm

Hi, I'm not really new to Mint, and I have another box that runs LM18+ with a nvidia driver just fine. I just can't get this one to work right. I know the graphics aren't working properly, e.g., Minecraft gets 0-1 fps. This is/was a fresh install. Everything else seems to work fine in the desktop. I'm using it for this post.

System: Host: dkm-Precision-M4400 Kernel: 4.13.0-36-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.4.0)
Desktop: Cinnamon 3.6.7 (Gtk 3.18.9-1ubuntu3.3)
Distro: Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia
Machine: System: Dell (portable) product: Precision M4400
Mobo: Dell model: 0NY980 Bios: Dell v: A26 date: 09/27/2011
CPU: Dual core Intel Core2 Duo P8600 (-MCP-) cache: 3072 KB
flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 ssse3 vmx) bmips: 9575
clock speeds: max: 2401 MHz 1: 800 MHz 2: 800 MHz
Graphics: Card: NVIDIA G96GLM [Quadro FX 770M] bus-ID: 01:00.0
Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: nouveau (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)
Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: NV96
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 17.2.8 Direct Rendering: Yes

The Driver manager show Nvidia-340 recommended and using, and I have purged it, and reinstalled it, but when I run the following, I still get nouveau showing up:

$ lspci -nnk | grep -i vga -A3 | grep 'in use'
Kernel driver in use: nouveau

Could be something simple, or could be just a quirky installation/configuration (haven't done anything with that quirky area folder, though). Any fresh ideas.

Thanks for you help and patience.

Open terminal and run

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-*
You'll have to enter your password.
Next go to the update manager and install everything
Re-boot.
Go to driver manager and install the recommended NVIDIA driver, current is 384.111
Re-Boot again
Done.

I'm having no issues with the current NVIDIA driver with the 4.13x Kernel

Code: Select all

Kernel: 4.13.0-36-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.4.0)
           Desktop: Cinnamon 3.6.7 (Gtk 3.18.9-1ubuntu3.3)

           flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 vmx) bmips: 14784
           clock speeds: max: 3700 MHz 1: 3700 MHz 2: 3700 MHz 3: 3700 MHz
           4: 3700 MHz
Graphics: Card: NVIDIA Device 1c03 bus-ID: 01:00.0
Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: nvidia (unloaded: fbdev, vesa, nouveau)
           Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz, 1920x1080@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: GeForce GTX 1060 6GB/PCIe/SSE2
GLX Version: 4.5.0 NVIDIA 384.111 Direct Rendering: Yes
You may have to blacklist the nouveau driver.

but you may have to blacklist or uninstall nouveau driver before it will be loaded. Nvidia and nouveau are not compatible to be run at the same time. When installing via the driver manager it automatically blacklists nouveau for you.
to blacklist do this :

Code: Select all

gksudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf
The file may be empty
add this line and save:

Code: Select all

blacklist nouveau

In my experience, the 4.13 kernels are incompatible with 340 series nvidia drivers. Site http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverRe ... 0042/en-us states Quadro FX 770M latest driver is Version 340.106.

My system has an old nvidia card that requires a 340 series driver, and I have to use a 4.4 kernel to get the driver to work. Currently running 4.4.0-116 kernel and nvidia 340.104. Works well.

Thanks for your advice on this one. I opted for installing the 4.4.0-116 kernel, since I too had verified through Nvidia's site that the driver version was correct. After a little mishaps with the apt cache reported as "corrupt," the Nvidia driver stuck, and appears to be working just fine. I think we can close this one out!
