(Solved, installed LM 19) Where can I find a list of CPUs supported by LM 18.3?

My query is summed up in the Subject line; Where can I find a list of CPUs supported by LM 18.3?

I'm starting to feel like I'm making an awful nuisance of myself in re my post about Key board and mouse lag / response delay,

One of the respondents in that thread remarked that my CPU isn't supported by Linux Mint 18.3. I am starting to think that buying a processor that is supported might be the course of least resistance, hence the desire for a list of supported processors.

the vast majority of cpu's are supported to Intel is well supported to I doubt that's the problem.

It's my opinion that the lag must lie elsewhere.

Instructions are CLEAR & simple. I really don't know how to make them more clear than that. But I'll repeat them here as well...

Open a terminal, copy/paste and enter:
gksudo xed /etc/default/grub
Change the following line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i915.alpha_support=1 quiet splash"
and save. In the terminal, copy/paste and enter:
sudo update-grub
After it finishes, copy/paste and enter again:
sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-intel
After it finishes, copy/paste and enter again:
sudo apt-get install linux-firmware
Reboot. You should also be on kernel 4.13.0-16. And to avoid misunderstanding, i will also repeat again...

Will the above instructions automagically solve all of the current weirdo keyboard / mouse behavior?
Maybe yes maybe not. But it will resolve some core basic issues & it will provide some pre-eliminary support for your system though...

4-5 different threads, a post of mine moved elsewhere, a private message (and also a thread about genre identities in between).
What for? It's 4 commands...run them, report back if still not fixed, and different ideas / suggestions will probably arise...

Thank you for all the kind work you have done on my behalf.

How humiliating, I'm replying using my Windows 10 machine as the LM 18.3 64 bit machine will not allow me to log in at the moment.

I tried following your instructions, when I got to; sudo apt-get update linux-firmware, I got the error message; the update command doesn't take any arguments. Up to that point everything went well as far as I can tell.

Since I had all my personal files copied to a thumb drive, I thought I'd just shut down and re-boot. after I rebooted and got to the login screen, the password box will not respond to the keyboard and I can't type my password. I'll wait for your reply, but I think I'm in for a reinstall of LM 18.3. I.e. I can't even get to the command line.

Indeed, my fault due to typing fast - it should be sudo apt-get install linux-firmware install, the above will simply do nothing (and thereby not update linux-firmware). I've corrected it above.

It might be a good idea starting with a clean state first, and then following the above. Quite a few people have CoffeeLake processors & they've got them running pretty ok.

This 64 bit machine running LM 18.3 w/ Xfce works better after applying the changes that you suggested, enough so that I've moved it to my main work station.

There is still some delay between when I press a key and when the corresponding character appears on the screen, it is still some what difficult to highlight without getting more text then you wanted and it's hard to land the cursor on an incorrect character, like wise using back space when correcting spelling errors often results in back-spacing over characters you intended to leave. So not ready for the big time yet.

tl/dr [Spelling was my worst subject in school, somewhere between a third and a quarter of the proceeding words were mis-spelled. Now a days I'm also having trouble reading the text due to failing eyesight. Usually when I have a longer post, I compose in Libre Office then copy and paste into this text box.]

I also think I owe you an apology for being unnecessarily obtuse and stubborn.

One more off topic matter and I will finish; I have an older machine at my computer repair shop. I suspect that it has a bad motherboard. It just quit in the middle of something, attempts to reboot don't even result in so much as the BIOS starting. So I am going to try to find a list of supported CPU's and their associated motherboards. If an internet search doesn't prove fruitful, I will be back with a question similar to the current topic.

Ok, now we've got your CoffeeLake support sorted out. For some reason, fbdev gets loaded, this would explain the graphics slowness.
Try the following, then reboot:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-legacy-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-video-all-hwe-16.04

Alas and alack, sigh, grumble and groan, now things seem worse! Well, maybe no worse then at the beginning of this endeavor.

So here is the most recent copy of inxi -Fxz I ran after trying to run: sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-legacy-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-video-all-hwe-16.04. I tried to run the command twice and got the same result. i.e. No improvements. I have included the messages that were on the terminal after both attempts. [What gave me the idea of saving the first one, I do not know.]

This is a very long document, I would understand if you might not have the time or inclination to address the matter further.

If you have further thoughts you would share or if you feel as if you have put too much of your time into this quest, I would understand either way. I’m gotten quite tired of the journey myself.

...with a couple of bumps but it seems that everything went ok:

Display Server: X.Org 1.19.5 drivers: fbdev (unloaded: vesa)
Resolution: 1920x1080@77.00hz
GLX Renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 5.0, 256 bits)

I'm afraid i'm out of ideas though - because this system is as much updated as possible by now: Coffeelake support enabled, latest linux-firmware & latest Xorg as well.
llvmpipe / fbdev is what should not get loaded there, it should instead recognize and use your Intel graphics card abilities...
I mean, every suggestion that i could personally make from here on, would be pure speculation - and if it would work, that would be more or less out of luck...
Maybe it would worth trying out the Xubuntu / Ubuntu Mate 17.10 variants & see if they play better overall (you'd still need the i915.alpha_support=1 on those as well). 18.04 comes out in around a month from now as well...

As mentioned in the Core i7 8700K, the only Linux issue we have experienced so far with Coffee Lake is over the i915 DRM driver appearing to have issues with the UHD Graphics 630. Stay tuned for benchmarks likely later today or tomorrow about the Coffee Lake graphics on Linux. (Update: With Linux 4.13~4.14, you need to set i915.alpha_support=1 to enable this "alpha" quality driver support for Coffee Lake.)

Aw well, all one can do in such situations is to try something, but when one has gotten to the point of throwing darts in the dark, then perhaps it’s time to look towards other alternatives. Waiting on 18.04 doesn’t seem to be too much of a burden.
