18.3 & ALC892: cracking sound...

Post by Rhinox »

I have problem with LinuxMint/Cinnamon 18.3 on older PC (some i5, z68 chipset, realtek ALC892 sound chip):

Sound seems to be "cracking" a little bit, as if playback is being interrupted randomly for a few miliseconds. I tested a few audio/video players, different media-files with various encoding, it is still the same. It seems to me to be driver-related problem, quite annoying. How could I fix it?

FYI, there was windows installed on this pc previously, and this problem was not there...

I have done it, and if anything, it is even worse now! Sound is cracking every 2-3 seconds. It is practically impossible to play any audio/video, because sound is terribly distorted...

It improved, but still noticeable. Less "cracking", but sound seems to be distorted like "over-amplified" (with volume set to ~50%).

But there is one more problem now: small stuttering when playing movies, like video shortly freezing every few seconds (again, no matter what kind of player/media I use). Quite visible when camera doing some panning. This was definitely not before, I would notice it...

you will need to purge nvidia and reinstall it
sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-*
reboot and if you want to try again use the command line to install nvidia

Removed nvidia-drivers, and video playback with open-source driver is better. Still some stuttering (is seems to me the longer is video played, the more stuttering), but less than before. As for the sound, it is still bad, cracking all the time.

Just to be sure there is no hw-problem, I swapped drives, booted old Win7 and guess what: no problem there at all. Video-playback smooth, sound without cracking...

Honestly, if this problem can not be fixed, then linux-mint (or linux in general) is still unusable as my primary desktop and I will have to revert back to windows...

you have 2 cards running and linux can't decide what to do. you need to tell it where the sound needs to go. can you disable an audio output in your bios? i find that sometimes these issues are desktop related. you should boot with linux-mint-xfce or linux-mint-mate and see if you have the same issues in the live sessions

2 cards? I do not understand. I have single audio "card" (according to manual, my motherboard has Realtek ALC892 audio chip) and single add-on graphic-card (GTX 780). I think this is quite common setup.

I could disable on-board sound chip in bios, but then my PC would be silent. What is such a PC good for?

is this true in your inxi report?
Card-1 NVIDIA GK110 HDMI Audio driver: snd_hda_intel bus-ID: 01:00.1
Card-2 Intel 6 Series/C200 Series Family High Definition Audio Controller

how do you connect to audio? is it hdmi or line-out?

I do not know what that means or how Linux detects this hardware. All I know is that I have Asus P8Z68-V motherboard and NVidia GeForce GTX-780 graphic card. There is not much more inside (some disks, memory modules, and that's it). This motherboard has Intel Z68 chipset (6-series, with Intel HD Audio Technology), and in motherboard-manual I found it has Realtek ALC892 on-board sound chip.

I do not know why that NVidia-card is detected as "Audio Card 1". It is graphic card, and I have single LCD attached to it using display-port. A pair of common speakers is attached to line-out 3.5mm jack (this one is definitely on motherboard, not on NVidia GFX card).

if you use the nvidia hdmi for display it also has sound embedded in it although if you do not have nvidia-drivers hdmi sound may not work properly. not sure what display you are using. is it the hdmi or dvi?

go to /etc/pulse/daemon.conf BACKitUP by compressing it or renaming it then open it and replace your content with this and REBOOT

As I wrote previously, I have single LCD attached to display-port on NVidia-card. I'm pretty sure about it, because my LCD has no hdmi (only display-port, dvi and d-sub).

I tested modified /etc/pulse/daemon.conf, with no success. If there is any change, then I did not notice it. There is still significant "cracking" sound, especially when playing music. Very disturbing...

I checked pulse manual to see what actually was changed in this config-file. Well, not much. All those uncommented values are just default values (at least that's what man pulse-daemon.conf says). The only real change is:

Code: Select all

; deferred-volume-safety-margin-usec = 8000
in original config-file it was:

Code: Select all

deferred-volume-safety-margin-usec = 1

This still seems "normal" to me. There is nothing "exotic" here, many computers have NVidia graphic cards (with hdmi-port) and on-board audio chip/chipset...

Hi
I have the same problem for years.
Whenever I open web it works fine. But after a while if I open another video on another page sound become cracked and distorted.
I close all pages sound continues for a few seconds and then sound disappears.
I solved problem like this:
I bought an USB sound interface form AliExpress and I plugged my sound jack into this little and cheap device. walaaaa!!!
Problem partially solved. :)
