[Solved]black screen

Post by bobguy10 »

so i have a laptop that came with windows 10, i never really had any problems but when i switched to linux mint, i started getting these blank screens, nothing shows up at all, i thought it was a screen saver at first but it wasnt, then i thought it might just have been a bug and i decided i would wait and maybe an update would fix it, after about a year living with the problem, it never got fixed, so then i thought it was the graphics processor, and i decided to try a different distro, i tried ubuntu, solus, debian, and fedora but they all did the same thing, after a while i started to notice that it seems like it does it until my laptop "heats up" so i dont know if this is a driver problem or something in that area but its annoying, once the screen blanks (sometimes before it boots and sometimes not) i cant get anything to show up unless i hold the power button down and then restart it, and if i leave my laptop idle for to long and it cools down, it does it, i have linux mint on 2 other computers and they have never done it at all, so does anyone have any idea what this could be? and how to fix it

(btw it has an amd processor)

The best thing to do in situations like this is to open a terminal and enter:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxd
Press enter.
Then copy/paste those results back to this thread. Use the code tags-click the </> icon above the reply window and paste the terminal output there.
These results are needed to answer your request for support

Hey, I've been having almost the exact same problem! The problem is not really that I am not a very nifty Linux user myself (I'm good at reading manuals and instructions and following without deviation), but everybody who tries to help is at least one of: inexperienced with Linux whatsoever (over the years, even non-programmers such as myself get to learn some things) | not able to physically get here and experiment on the computer | an Nvidia user.

The only thing that they did tip me off to was about the computer ‘cooling down’.

Thanks for the link, asinoro! I hope barryw's solution works.
