Mint 17.3 running in software rendering mode, unloaded: fbdev, modesetting, vesa

Post by xpace »

Hi guys,

I know, reading the subject will give you a a big question mark in your head (why again) but this is different - lot different :)

I'm not newbie in any way but don't have too much of an experience in Linux, so here I am asking question.

I have removed SSD drive with perfectly running LM 17.3 from an old computer which was playing up(hardware-wise) and have put it in a brand new Lenovo M710 SFF. Off course it didn't start right away so have run Boot repair from USB and fixed the booting. I wasn't quick enough to see what was happening and I didn't save the link(I did but can't find it) with the log file. I have noticed in the repair progress that it was unloading whole bunch of files and giving me error messages, but since I have booted into the OS I was not worried too much until I have noticed the CInamon was running in software rendering mode. Well not a big issue until there is so much video corruption in viewed files and even libre office files while scrolling through excel sheets. So have decided to switch to Mate desktop which helped fair bit but still not 100%. After spending too many hours investigating and searching for solution I have given up and decided to ask question here.

lshw will show this about graphic card

Code: Select all

*-display
             description: VGA compatible controller
             product: Intel Corporation
             vendor: Intel Corporation
             physical id: 2
             bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0
             version: 04
             width: 64 bits
             clock: 33MHz
             capabilities: vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom
             configuration: driver=i915_bpo latency=0

inxi -Gx will give this

Code: Select all

Graphics:
Card-1: Intel Device driver: i915_bpo v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0
Display Server: X.org 1.15.1 driver: intel
  unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa tty: 80x25
Message: Advanced graphics data unavailable in console. Try -G --display

and Driver manager is completely empty

Code: Select all

Linux 4.4.0-116-generic #140~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Feb 16 09:25:20 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Distributor ID:	LinuxMint
Description:	Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa
Release:	17.3
Codename:	rosa
not sure what else you would need to know so please ask

Thank you very much

Hi xpace and welcome to the forum.

As you're now using a new(ish) computer, maybe this would help: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... l-graphics

Intel kabylake processor need newer kernel.
You can try using upstream kernels archive (beware : not recommended , can crash your system ) https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds
I think installing LM18.3 will do safer job. Try in live environment first

I checked the website regarding removing the xorg intel driver and I'm really into trying it but since I am doing this remotely, I'm not sure if I won't get stuck. What you think ?

I wouldn't do kernel upgrade and I want to upgrade to 18.3 but I am doing this remotely so the only option would be mintupgrade command. What do you guys think ?

I can't afford to crash the system in any way.

Thanks again

LM cannot upgrade directly from 17.3 to 18.3 directly. There is tutorial from clem : https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2
For me usually back up my data and do fresh install ( but cannot be done remotely )

I agree with fresh install but not possible for me and yes the 17.3 can be upgraded directly according to this: https://www.tecmint.com/upgrade-linux-m ... x-mint-18/

thanks

Be forewarned that some users have had problems upgrading and wound up having to reinstall from scratch.

well, that's why I'm sceptic to go ahead with these :)
