[Solved] CD drive unable to write

Post by MinorThreat »

I tried burning an ISO image to CD-R using both gksudo k3b and xfburn; both attempts failed. Even though my computer is pretty new, I believe my cd drive is faulty. Before I try to install a new one, I wanted to ask for any assistance/ideas. Maybe I'm overlooking something obvious.

Maybe I'm overlooking something obvious.
If you lucky the obvious thing is that the ISOs are too big ( > 1G) to fit on a CD - you need a DVD.

The ISO I'm trying to burn is 380M. Audio and video work fine, but unable to write. I've cleaned the laser lens, tried different CDs, different burning programs. I'm at a loss.

Oops, I made a dumb assumption.

What output do you see if you enter

Code: Select all

k3b
or

Code: Select all

xfburn
in a terminal (Edit: and try to burn the CD) ? (IOW, Not starting from a menu)

Re: CD drive unable to write

@MinorThreat:
1) Can the drive read any media? Let's make sure it is not a drive failure.

2) Can you write different file (small test file) and not the ISO file?

3) Are you using write-able media? (possible to test on different drive or different computer)?

Maybe this will help get a better diagnosis??

The sense codes suggest bad media. Try burning at a lower speed as a test, e.g. drop from 24x to 8x. Might also try another brand of media.

Re: CD drive unable to write

My CD/DVD drive can read, but can't write. There are times, however, when it can't read and the cd just spins and makes various clicking, R2D2 noises; but that can be fixed by pressing down on it to make sure it's seated right up against the laser scanner. I've tried burning at various speeds trying both TAO and DAO. I have another older Dell laptop that had no problem burning the ISO image using k3b, so I think my drive on my newer laptop is jacked. My next step is to look for my little screw driver and make sure there are no loose connections.

Re: CD drive unable to write

Post by Joe2Shoe »

All blank media are not created equal; I had the worst time trying to burn something with Memorex CD/DVD disks. I have been using RiDATA blank DVDs (newegg) for the past 10+ years and not one coaster.
Could be that the CD drive is fubar and needs to be replaced. I just replaced a DVDRW drive for one of my laptops with a used drive on eBay for $8.00.
You could boot a LM Live CD/DVD/USB and see if k3b or xfburn will burn in Live mode, just to see if the CD drive is still burnable.
Good luck.

It was a faulty drive, which surprises me because this laptop is pretty new. The hardest part was removing the bevel without breaking the plastic clips, but everything is working fine now.
