No wifi on new HP laptop (SOLVED)

Post by DesertDweller »

I recently bought a new 2018 Newest HP Premium 15.6" Laptop. It came with Windows 10. I started it up to make sure everything worked. It did work. I removed Win 10 and installed Mint 18.3. That install went great until I unplugged the ethernet cable. No wifi. I also had no wifi from the DVD. That's why I had to use the ethernet cable.
I contacted the HP helpless desk. They told me since I replaced Win 10 with a Linux product, I violated my warranty with HP. But they would be happy to help me for a fee. No thanks.
I looked through this forum for answers and I came close. Now when i click on the network icon on the task bar it reads:

WIRED connected
WIRELESS unavailable

I couldn't get the WIRELESS phrase when I first installed Mint.
I have no idea where to go from here.
Help?

Where did you get the source code for the kernel module for the wifi?

I tried a couple of fixes on this forum and a couple from other help sites. I might have downloaded what you're asking about from one of those sites. As you can tell I'm still pretty new at this.

Code: Select all

sudo dkms remove rtlwifi-new/0.6
sudo dkms remove rtlwifi-new/1.0
sudo dkms uninstall rtlwifi-new/0.6 --all
sudo dkms uninstall rtlwifi-new/1.0 --all
Then use the Mint Update Manager, click View/Linux kernels, click 4.4 on the left side and install the newest 4.4.0 kernel, reboot and use Grub Menu/Advanced Options, select the 4.4.0 kernel to boot into. If everything works correctly with 4.4.0, use the Update Manager to uninstall the 4.10 kernel you have. If 4.4 doesn't work, install the newest 4.13 kernel and reboot, since 4.13 is higher numbered than 4.10 it should use 4.13 by default after a reboot

Let me know what kernel works

I tried 4.4, no luck
I tried 410, no luck
I tried 4.13, no luck.
Should I take a sledgehammer to this HP and buy a Dell?

Just use the 4.13 kernel. Make sure you are booted into it, then in terminal

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install build-essential git dkms
git clone https://github.com/jeremyb31/rtl8723de.git
sudo dkms add ./rtl8723de
sudo dkms install rtl8723de/5.1.1.8_21285.20171026_COEX20170111-1414
Reboot and wifi should function
