Trouble with 4.15.0-20 kernel

Post by nkoropoff » Mon May 07, 2018 2:12 pm

I was running 4.15.0-15 on my Lenovo M710q with zero problems. Installed the 4.15.0-20 that showed as available on Update Manager today but blank screen instead of prompt for encryption password. Went back to 4.15.0-15 and all is well. Not clear to me what went wrong but wanted to bring to someone's attention.

Linux Mint 18.3 (64-bit) on Intel Core i7-7700T Processor with Integrated Intel HD Graphics

i am having hardware problems updating the kernel too, and have also reverted to 4.15.0.15

I am running an Asus X550C laptop. 8G RAM, 1GB HD
Running Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64bit

Graphics: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core Processor Graphics Controller
Wireless mouse: Logitech M315/M235

After installing the 4.15.0.20 kernel, the system booted in software rendering mode and my wireless mouse didn't work.
I reverted back to the previous kernel and everything worked fine.

I have a desktop machine, also running Mint (same version), also with an Intel graphics controller.
I am reluctant to upgrade my kernel on that computer too.

Not all kernels will work with all hardware, that is a well known fact. Not sure whose attention is needed... as long as you are paying attention, which you are. :wink:

Similar problems with 4.15.0.20 here:

System reboots successfully but USB keyboard isn't reacting anymore. Mouse and everything else is OK.
It's an old Dell Precision 690 with Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon (but running MATE now) and a Cherry USB keyboard. All previous kernels worked without a problem.

Reverted back to 4.15.0.15 as well

Im thinking that this kernel could be "buggy"...ive never had a kernel problem until now with this one...i reverted back to the 4.15.0-15 after the "20" refused to connect to the internet with wired ethernet cable from desktop to router...im running a "Beaver Creek AMD quad core processor...this is not just an AMD problem but also tested this on my intel systems...also not just a Mint problem but also on my Peppermint 8 systems...there is a similar Post under the title of driver problems with 4.15.0-20 kernel that should/could be combined with this or the other way around by a Forum Moderator when they notice this...DAMIEN

Same problem on my HP 15-d008sv with Intel Core i3-3110M. Wifi not working and graphics (Cinnamon) not hardware accelerated. Went back to the -15 kernel.
Is that going to be handled in some way from the Mint devs, or is it a solely Ubuntu staff matter?

I am also experience a hardware problem with this kernel. When the system boots to the login screen my Roccat Isku FX keyboard stops responding. I am therefore unable to login, or do anything requiring the keyboard. Everything works fine if I revert back to kernel 4.15.0-15.

My Specs:
OS: Linux Mint 18.3
CPU: AMD FX 8350 8-core
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 (Driver: 396.24)
RAM: 16GB

Same problem here.
wifi not working, ethernet card is not working, sound card is not working, cinnamon is at fallback mode. I have to return 15 and uninstall 20. Reverting makes everything correct and fine and smooth again.
LM 18.3 i7-7700 nvidia 1050
First time have experienced this kind of problem. Upto now every kernel update was just fine.
The fear right now is LM 19 default kernel choice. I hope it will not 20. :)

eh ..... trouble at mill ..
Likely a different issue as the person reporting the bug had done a change to sources.list to force an upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04
I am using the 4.15.0-20 kernel on Ubuntu 18.04 without an issue.
Some may want to check results for

Code: Select all

dkms status; dpkg -l | grep linux-image | grep 4.15.0-20
And post results

EDIT: do

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-20-generic
Reboot

Thanks, JeremyB!

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-20-generic
This seems to have fixed my issue.

Same problem, caught in a "Running scripts/local-block" loop on boot, then "Gave up waiting for root device."

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-20-generic
did the trick. Thanks!

That worked even though I got this message:

Code: Select all

Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 4.15.0-20-generic (x86_64)
Consult /var/lib/dkms/ndiswrapper/1.60/build/make.log for more information.
That make.log starts with:

Code: Select all

DKMS make.log for ndiswrapper-1.60 for kernel 4.15.0-20-generic (x86_64)
Tue May  8 08:48:16 CEST 2018
make: Entering directory '/usr/src/linux-headers-4.15.0-20-generic'
Makefile:976: "Cannot use CONFIG_STACK_VALIDATION=y, please install libelf-dev, libelf-devel or elfutils-libelf-devel"
...
As for Mint, libelf-devel and elfutils-libelf-devel is not available.

So fixing the Kernel issue for Mint might work better with this:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libelf-dev
sudo apt-get install linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-20-generic
JeremyB, thank you!

I still get an error message.
But the Kernal works.

I'm having the same problem, and I don't have any internet connection to install any extra package! :cry:

Some may have to reboot and use grub menu/advanced options to boot into a working kernel and then

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-base linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-20-generic
Reboot
This is the result of changes to the kernel from upstream, Linux/Ubuntu. The linux-modules is a dependency of linux-image but linux-modules-extra isn't so it doesn't get installed automatically

They perhaps don't know how to boot with the previous kernel. I myself forgot how I did that with the graphic splash, because I configured my grub only to show the console without fancy graphics. Then getting into the menu where one can select previous Kernels (if still installed) is easy.

Code: Select all

# /etc/default/grub

# If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update
# /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
# For full documentation of the options in this file, see:
#   info -f grub -n 'Simple configuration'

#GRUB_DEFAULT=0
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
#GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
#GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=2
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=false
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

# ... ... ... ...
After editing the file with

Code: Select all

sudo xed /etc/default/grub
run

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub

Hi,

The issue illustrated by JeremyB is an issue in the Linux Mint update manager. Kernel package names changed upstream, starting with 4.15.. and the Update Manager has to adapt to that.

This was fixed today in the git version, https://github.com/linuxmint/mintupdate ... _5.3.4.zip (please use caution and make sure you've got system snapshots in place if testing this version and it is a development version). We'll backport the fix ASAP.

The issue described in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1767133 is upstream from us and is a separate issue.

As JeremyB stated, this should workaround both issues:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-base linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-20-generic
