HP Spectre X360 13T / Can't rotate the screen

Post by anick76 » Wed May 09, 2018 7:20 am

I've been using Linux Mint 18.3 on my Intel Nuc for a while, and everything is great.

Today I just got a new laptop. (HP Spectre X360 13T / Product No. 1ZX32AV_1) First thing I did was delete windows 10 and install Linux Mint 18.3. Everything was going smoothly, but I can't seem to rotate the display clockwise or counter clockwise at all. When I try to rotate the display using : System Settings > Display , my laptop monitor will go dark (off) and never back on again no matter how long I wait. I have to force shutdown my laptop and turn it on again. Other than this, everything seem to working fine. I want to rotate the display to use it as an ebook reader. If it can't rotate the display, I'll have to use it as a regular touch screen laptop instead.

Any suggestion?

Please run the following commands from Terminal and post back the results.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

Code: Select all

sudo lshw -c video

Code: Select all

xrandr

Looking at the spec for that Laptop, I see it has UHD/4K capability. I'll take a stretch and suggest the problem might tie to use of UHD level resolutions. Have you tried any lower resolutions down in the standard HD range or lower for test?

This is what my terminal looks like with your scripts. (My laptop's screen is only 1080p/touch, Not 4k one.)

FYI......it's usually better to copy-paste the results of the Terminal commands back and insert them using the icon </> on the posting toolbar.

OK....I see the Intel driver is loaded and the resolution is currently HD 1920x1080. Nothing abnormal is showing, although the old 4.13 kernel was a little buggy after the changes back in January for Meltdown/Spectre fixes. If you did an update to that kernel from a fresh install of Mint 18.3, you may still have the 4.10 kernel installed.

Could you please try a resolution, like 1280x720 for a test from "Display" and then try rotation.

I'd also be curious if you selected the older 4.10 kernel (assuming you still have it installed) from Grub Options menu for a test to see if it's anything tied to kernel at the root of the problem.

I'm using Linux kernel "4.13.0-41.generic" at the moment. And it's still the same problem on 1280x720 still.

You might want to read through this thread at HP on X360 problems with Linux and there are comments about auto screen rotation.

Last night I installed Linux kernel 4.15.18 and it still doesn't work.

I'll try read through the thread at HP again see If I can come up with something then.

Other than this, I'm very satisfying with what I have right now.

Thanks again for your help.

Right now on my Laptop When I flip the screen over the keyboard disable itself just fine. The only problem is the screen can not change orientation either manually or automatically.

I've tried run "Ubuntu Mate 18.04" out of curiosity. The screen can manually flip using setting in "Display Menu" but the touch screen register is way off.

So back to Linux Mint again.

I guess it's the price to pay for using Linux Mint instead of Windows 10 (Which I'm willing to.)

Until there is other way then.
