Getting my Microphone to work

Postby StrawberryWeasel » Tue Jun 02, 2009 10:22 pm

I've got a Gateway Mt6840 laptop with front audio jacks, running Mint 6 I can't seem to get the mic to work. I've unmuted it in pulseaudio, for some reason the default is muted
Turned up the capture volume in alsamixer to 100, but I've noticed I don't have a mic setting in alsamixer, I have seen reference to that elsewhere. I'm not sure if capture provides the same function.

and I still can't get anything from it?
I'd like to get the mic working just enough to use Skype(I know Skype has a whole nother pile of issues, but I seem to have got it happy and behaved finally by changing the sound settings within it. It makes calls and I can hear just not speak)
so I don't really care about sound quality for recording or any of that stuff.

EDIT: If I try to test the mic in Sound control I just get an error about failed to create pipeline, then it freezes completely.
Would switching to a USB Mic help?

You have to tell us more facts.
The minimum is exactly which Mint you have - which version and which edition (main or any of the CEs)
We also need to know a bit about all your hardware.
Run " lspci " in a terminal and post here (to avoid misunderstanding - the first character is a minor L and you copy by marking with the mouse and then right click)
Some wifi and possibly built in sound can be connected to USB even if they are internal - if you suspect you have one of these run " lsusb " in a terminal.
Also tell us if this is using mint4win or not, quite important
This is a standard answer so it may not be fully applicable to your situation

I'm running a stock mint 6 with all updates applied, no mint4win or anything else.

This is the first ICH where the standard fix for HDA works
viewtopic.php?f=48&t=17801&p=107982&hilit=ich8+alsa#p107982
You change model to what ever you have or auto
You may have to try different "models" to get it to work - brand or model ...
