SIM cards

Post by AndyMH » Thu May 10, 2018 11:15 am

Just realised, having had the laptop over a year, that there is a SIM card slot in it. Is there any support in mint for this so that if I put a SIM in, mint will recognise it so that I can access the internet while away from wifi.

There is support but your mileage may vary. In my Thinkpad T460s I have some troubles with the software. I'd try it by popping in a SIM card, you'll probably get a popup asking for PIN code.

Unfortunately I haven't got it working but maybe you can. I am more than interested how it works out for you..

Thanks, I'll try and see what happens. BTW, cut my teeth on CPM, z80 twin floppies, back in the early 80's

Done a bit more research, I'm going to need a WWAN card, checked I have the antenna leads but no card. I can get one off ebay (from China) for about £15 (or more expensive closer to home). Also found a post suggesting that a T460 'should' work with Ubuntu 16.04. I've got a £5 pay as you go SIM, I'll get a WWAN card and have a play. I'll let you know how I get on.

I've got one working in my t410 laptop on mint with a giffgaff sim (O2). Took a little fiddling with the software for my particular card, but works ok. No luck with the gps (although that works on windows).
