Linux Mint and DELL Precision 5510 Wireless

Post by Anestis »

Hi all,

I have a DELL precision 5510 that the latest version of Linux Mint is installed on. However, it doesn't seem to recognise or have a driver for the Wireless chip.

LAN cable works fine via USB-C ethernet adapter.

I've done some research and searching and found various instructions to try and get wireless working but nothing has worked. ANd yes, the wireless has worked under Windows 10. NO, this isn't a dual-boot machine. At the moment it only has Linux Mint installed.

IS there someone who has had the same issue who can provide some step-by-step instructions on how they got wireless working on a DELL Precision 5510?

Please and thank you.

after doing some research on your Dell model , seems it worked ok with Ubuntu 14.04 /Mint 17.x series. But may not work well with newer versions.
It has an Intel wireless card Which does not work well with newer Kernels.
These pages from Dell may be of help.
http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/ ... ns?lang=en and
http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/ ... an_Install

In my opinion the wireless card in your model will not work with kernels much newer than 3.19 Which is way to old to be using today.
your best option may be to purchase a usb wireless dongle that is known to work with linux.
Sorry can't be of more help.
Good Luck.
P.S. Maybe someone else will come along who actually has got it working.

Well, the screen decided to start flickering. Thought it was a Linux driver issue so installed Windows 10 and still no Wireless card and screen flicker.

Found out the laptop is still under warranty, so I called DELL for an on-site tech to come and fix the issues.

Upon opening the laptop they found that there was no wireless card installed, even though it should have had one. After approval from DELL one has now been installed.

The screen flickering issue is being caused by a faulty cable that controls the touchscreen. The tech has disconnected that cable, but needs to get a new LCD to replace as the cable is integral to the LCD.

This will hopefully happen on Monday.

So, all around good news.
