Can anybody confirm stable work of Mint Mate on Dell XPS 9360?

Post by Boris » Mon May 21, 2018 5:01 am

Hi,

Can anybody confirm stable work (as daily driver for work, not 5 min test in a virtual box/machine) of Mint Mate on Dell XPS 9360 (with 8th gen Intel)? If so, what Kernel are you using?

I'm currently using latest Ubuntu Mate, but the touchpad is a mess.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Boris and Welcome to Linux Mint,

I can not speak to the advisability of using linux on the Dell xps 9360 other than to point out that Dell does provide Drivers for Ubuntu 16.04 which is what mint 18.3 is based upon You may want to try Dell's own drivers found here: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/ ... op/drivers and see if your touchpad problems are solved. But I have no personal experience with that machine.
My older dells all work well with mint and I'm using this one as my daily driver with no problems.
Hopefully others will be along with helpful hints.
Good Luck in your search.

Thanks kc1di. Not much luck. Right edge of the touchpad is completely unresponsive. Will try to experiment Kernels.

Which version of mint are you using?
I would try the 4.15-20 kernel.
or the 4.4.x kernel as that one is long term support.

By default I had 4.15.0.20.23 and 4.15.0.20.21 (not acceptable). Now I'm testing 4.10.17 (kinda ok, but will see). Wanna try 4.4.132 and 4.16.3.

4.16 is not official for Mint yet and there will be some things that are not included patches in the vinilla package.
4.10 had some problems with my dell. I would go back to 4.4.x

I don't know what else to do. I like Mint the most, but it seems to lag behind. None of my devices is glitch-free. I bought this Dell just because it should be Linux-friendly (as an opposite to Lenovo ThinkPad's). Turns out Dell also has issues. Hopefully the next version of Linux Mint will be out soon and will be compatible with "safe boot".

pretty much the hardware issues will be the same as Ubuntu's if it's going to work it should work on Ubuntu 18.04 which Mint 19 will be base upon. so I would give ubuntu 18.04 a try see if the touch pad works? You should be able to tell from the Live .iso.
Other than that I would also check with Dell. They do some of their own drivers and patches for linux Not sure your Machine is one of them though.
Good Luck.

There are lots of results to this Google-search - although a quick peruse suggests they may be related to versions of this hardware with older CPU's - https://www.google.com/search?q=XPS+936 ... pad+Ubuntu - still worth a try to see if any of the solutions help.

As stated any advice specific to Ubuntu 16.04 should apply equally to Mint 18.x, any advice specific to Ubuntu 18.04 should apply to the forthcoming Mint 19.

I don't think older kernels are going to help with an 8th generation Intel CPU.

Hmm. Here is the thing, I'm on the latest Ubuntu Mate. Currently using Kernel 4.16.3. Works acceptable for now, but it's too early to judge. Also, I think that the laptop feels cooler. Maybe I'm mistaken. Will continue the testing. Hopefully someone with the same machine has solid solution.
