11-yr-old, single-core laptop

Can you guys recommend a distro that is stable like Mint but would run faster than Mint XFCE on this machine? It will be used only for browsing the internet, and playing MP3 files. This is an 11-year-old machine with 900 MB of RAM

Antix should run OK for what you want

MX Linux. But keep in mind that the internet itself is much heavier than it used to be and your machine has simply not kept up with the times.

Moem is correct...just activating a browser to go on line is going to overwhelm your 900 MBs of ram...DAMIEN

well - - actually, either of the above Two System, would work just fine.
( they are from the same group of developers )
and they both use the XFCE Desktop Environment.


the biggest issue, if you watch any video, like Youtube is the CPU,
- if it's too slow, & followed by the amount of RAM that is available.

I'm using an single core AMD Sempron 145, and with 4 GB of RAM and onboard video have no problems running youtube's 720p video on it. I do however switch to my other computer with 4 core AMD PhenomX4 when needing to view 1080p content, such as catching up on a TV series show at the appropriate sites.

I have an old 1000 MHz, single core AMD (Duron, I think) desktop with 768 MB RAM that had Win98 on it when I got it. antiX runs surprisingly well on it. It won't stream videos online, but if I download them with youtube-dl or other downloader, they will play off the hard drive OK. LXLE will run on pretty light equipment, too. I gave a friend an old single core laptop a few years ago with MX on it, and he was pretty pleased with it.

Wow, antiX is amazing! But MX-17 turns out heavier than Mint 18.3 XFCE.
Also, it gave me a hard time trying to test it because of its PAE requirement.
