No headphone jack sense, internal microphone

No headphone jack sense, internal microphone – nightmare come true on my new laptop

Well, it's a nightmare come true. My old laptop was on its last legs, so I decided to buy a new one just to go with Mint 7. I took the live CD into my favorite PC shop and tested it on an Acer Aspire 4930G. Everything seemed fine, including sound playing from the built-in speakers (although at a low volume), so it was a sale. It never occurred to me to test the headphone jack. Lo and behold, after I partition my drive and get dual booting all setup with Vista, I find no sound will come out of the jack, although it works well with Vista. Sound from the jack is absolutely essential for me and Mint will not be a viable alternative without it.

A post that I found states how to correct the problem:

“The audio requires the “snd-intel-hda” module from the 2.6.27 kernel.
To be able to use the internal microphone, headphone jack sense and channel mode, the latest alsa-driver snapshot must be used (version > 1.0.18a).”

My sound card is:

SoundIntel HDA with 5.1 audio output (Realtek ALC888S-VC chipset)

I am a noob and am not familiar with the command line.

Please help and you will be a friend for life

SoundIntel HDA

this means you have Intel HDA :) and it is very probable that the standard solution for all kinds of problems with HDA works

You change model to what ever you have or auto
You may have to try different "models" to get it to work - brand or model ...

Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it

Thanks so much, Husse -- very much appreciated. I'll give it a try...
