issues with mouse

Post by bethm » Tue Jun 12, 2018 12:41 pm

Hi I am running Linux mint Silvia 18.3? I am having issues with the mouse, just like I did when using mint Sonja, what is happening is the mouse freezes and cannot use it after some time, it may move but it does not respond, and therefore cannot close anything down,it is so frustrating, I am studying at the moment, and because of this i have to wait so long, before anything happens, I find it happens more when using my browser firefox and when using version Libreoffice 5.4.1 i think it is, Can someone help with this and fix this, I never had any issues with my mouse when using ubuntu linux at all it is just the mint versions

Please run the following command from Terminal and post back the results.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
If it's a wireless mouse, have you checked the battery?

Is the keyboard also USB?

Have you tried moving the mouse to other front/rear USB ports for test, prior to boot?

If you pull and replug the USB for the mouse after freeze, does it resort use / come back from freeze? Same question, but move it to another USB port, as test.

Do you have another mouse you can test?

That system is dated back to 2005. Pretty old. When did it last work with Ubuntu and which version?

Hello Clix Trix thanks for your reply,
i have done all of the above I changed the usb ports twice now I also purchased a new mouse, same problems happening, and yes my keyboard is usb as well,
the version of ubuntu I was running was precise 12.04.5 LTS 32 bit before and then linux mint Sonja and now Silvia, I have tried to replug it after it has become frozen but will try that, thank you

Hello Again,
My mouse froze once again so I tried another port, same thing, then switched it back to the prior one all to no avail.

Next time it freezes, try to start a terminal and post the output of this terminal command:

Code: Select all

dmesg
Enclose the results in-between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

I agree with Cat's suggestion. However, is the keyboard also frozen when the mouse freezes?

I'd also like to know if you installed the Intel Microcode from Driver Manager?

Edit: Does the problem occur with the USB Flash Drive removed from the system?

Edit2: Which Pentium 4 model do you have installed and was that a later upgrade to the system?

I agree with Cat's suggestion. However, is the keyboard also frozen when the mouse freezes?

I'd also like to know if you installed the Intel Microcode from Driver Manager?

Edit: Does the problem occur with the USB Flash Drive removed from the system?

Edit2: Which Pentium 4 model do you have installed and was that a later upgrade to the system?
Hi Clixtrix,
yes the problem occurs when the usb drive is removed or isn't does not seem to help, but i have noticed as well if i run firefox as well as libre office or anything else pretty much on the taskbar, it stuffs up,
No I never installed any driver from the driver manager,
sorry can't tell you much about intel pentium 4, and i have never touched that either, as far as the keyboard frozen as well it does freeze pretty much although there is some time before you can perform certain shortcuts, it just doesn't do it straight away

Well....let me put some ideas on the table.

1) I asked about your processor model because you are running the original v01.03 BIOS release for that system/motherboard. Later edition P4 processors did require a BIOS update for support. If the system was purchased new by you, then the possibility of a BIOS mismatch is less likely. Here is the BIOS download site for your system. Look at the Revision History section for details. One item that catches my attention is an update for native USB 2.0 support. I asked about Intel Microcode use around the same issue.

2) In looking at your specs, I see you have only 1GB of memory. + 1GB swap. Your memory use from inxi shows 707.4MB of 990.6MB available, which is probably your use at start (little less than mine with system in my sig). What catches my attention from your description is the tie between launch of apps (like Firefox and Libreoffice) that would definitely require a combined memory use above 1GB and the freezes. I'm wondering if the freezes are tied to a memory/swap problem.

To eliminate a memory problem, it would be a good idea to run Memtest86+. Also, have you checked the hard drive from the Disks app for any problems in it's SMART data.

Edit: Just as a suggestion...... If I were looking to run Mint on that system, I would probably chose the Xfce edition as less resource intensive. It would probably load at start around 400MB, which is more suited to a 1GB system.

I apologize for not answering sooner, however, I did read your comments, so I thank you so much for your help Clixtrix, and spending time on this, so i did download the memtest, but did not do anything else with it, and I saw another person complaining about his mouse freezing, so I went to the terminal and ran a test about that, where it told me I have low ram, so what I will do is to take your advice and install xfce, so once again Thank you so much.
