I am wondering if xfce desktop would run better , nowdays I am under LM MATE 18.3, but sometimes it tends to go slow, mostly when opening Chromiun or Mozila browser. Also the fan of the processor sometimes stars spining like crazzy. Also the main menu consumes a lot of memory.

I have been testing xfce 18.3 from USB live and it goes fine...but you know everything in live mode is fine... so I am not sure. This version also have transparencies in the menu that I like and the menu itself is better for me.

As I am not and advanced user (only 2 years old in linux word) I wonder which Microsoft Windows 7 versión are xfce/Mate most likely in performance, this is only for myself to make a quick comparizon, if there is any.

This is the results of vmstat -s under MATE:

Code: Select all

vmstat -s
      3947616 K total memory
      1074316 K used memory
      1593092 K active memory
      1458444 K inactive memory
       571312 K free memory
       314348 K buffer memory
      1987640 K swap cache
      2097148 K total swap
        86344 K used swap
      2010804 K free swap
        43799 non-nice user cpu ticks
         2487 nice user cpu ticks
        20454 system cpu ticks
       752622 idle cpu ticks
         7740 IO-wait cpu ticks
            0 IRQ cpu ticks
          338 softirq cpu ticks
            0 stolen cpu ticks
      2276269 pages paged in
       124817 pages paged out
         1625 pages swapped in
        31137 pages swapped out
      1349182 interrupts
      5747400 CPU context switches
   1529000256 boot time
        12611 forks
Here is a capture of the system monitor under MATE:

Will I go faster if I install xfce?
Thanks in advanced.

Any Mint DE should work with your equipment.
I doubt you'll find a big difference in xfce vs Cinnamon on that machine. You may have to do some work to get wireless working but other than that it should work fine.
Though XFCE is a fine Desktop. Enjoy the learning curve.

Thank you very much for your reply. I used to have cinnamon, but then I changed into Mate, somewhere in between I used KDE but it was too much for this machine.
I always wondered if my CPU i5 was good for real.

I'd stick with MATE, your only problem seems browsers related. You can speed that up by adding UBlock and also the nocoins.txt script to it or Greasemonkey Add-on to stop possible coin miners. In the about:config of FF, you might consider nuking all the "telemetry" tracking in FF. Also set media.autoplay.enabled to false, especially if you like to open a number of tabs that have video content in them, such as youtube. Maybe disable a couple of the "prefetch" entries too.
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....

I have a similar CPU:

Code: Select all

CPU: Dual core Intel Core i5-2520M (-HT-MCP-) cache: 3072 KB
           flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 vmx) bmips: 9976
           clock speeds: max: 3200 MHz 1: 1556 MHz 2: 1921 MHz 3: 2437 MHz 4: 1508 MHz
I also have the problem of opening Chrome. When I open Chrome the first time, it takes several seconds to start. But then (in the same session of Mint) it re-opens quickly.

I think you'll have the same problem with any flavor. I've tried them all on my HP EliteBook. Chrome acts the same way.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I run 18.3 Cinnamon.

I don't think there's enough of a speed difference between Mate and Xfce to warrant a clean reinstall ... installing multiple DEs is just a bad idea. Xfce used to be noticeably faster but not any more, at least since Xfce 4.12.
