What I remember worked was:
Disabling IOMMU in the bios
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash amdgpu.dc=1" into grub
Kernel 4.17 upwards using ukuu from mainline
padoka or oibaf PPA for latest Mesa
Thanks, still a bit too much hassle.. I know if need to make it to work is fine, but otherwise it would be nice, if it could work out of box.. sets hope in Mint 19.1 etc.. I have 2200G in my mother / my small nephews visiting gaming machines as back up OS, so i will bother only if would work out of box, because for example that grub line, i will probably fotgot it and change GPU and have some boot problems, until i will remember that i set something special in grub in the past..

I don't want to promote any distro but I also don't want people to pass on this fantastic AMD chip and not be afraid to use it with Linux. Have a look at Manjaro 18. It should works out of the box until Mint catch up without any special hassle to install it. You can try the live version just to kick the tires first.

As of now, Manjaro 18 come with 4.19.4 - Mesa 18.2.5
Linux Mint Cinnamon, AMD FX-6300 (6 x 4Ghz), Nvidia GTX-650 TI, 8 Gig DDR3 1600, SSD Seagate + Samsung 840 EVO, Seagate 1GB 7200rpm, Gigabyte Motherboard GA-970A.

Using the Ryzen 3 2200G on an Asrock B450 Pro4 motherboard, Bios 1.50 .
With Mint 19 the GUI didn't work straight out of the box for me, had to use recovery mode. The GUI worked once the kernel was upgraded to 4.15.0-39 , then it uses the ati, amdgpu driver. But it seems slow (local HD MP4 movies not smooth), va_info shows an error. And keyboard is slow, while cpu load 0.
If I upgrade the driver to amdgpu-pro 18.40 it doesn't work, just a grey screen and cursor. Recovery mode works.
With Mint 18.3 it works after upgrading to 4.15.0-39 (ati driver), before that either split screen or use recovery mode (vesa driver).
With Mint 17.3 it works straight after install using the vesa driver, kernel 4.4.0-139.
AV-Linux also works straight after install using the vesa driver, kernel 4.16.12-rt5-avl1 .

I hope Mint 19.1 will get a higher kernel version.

I would not use amdgpu-pro for this CPU but mesa from padoka or oibaf, as it works very well.
Installing a newer kernel up to 4.20.rc4 in Mint is very easy when using ukuu.

Are there any reasons why "padoka" or "oibaf" ppa's should be preferred over the Ubuntu-X team ppa?

One bit says: YES, the other answers: NO.. Guess who's he and who's she..! ;)

Padoka and Oibaf offer newer versions than Ubuntu-X.

Now why it could be implemented by Mint team?
