[SOLVED] Problem with sound

Post by guidgen »

Hi,

Today I noticed that sound in my Lenovo ideapad 320 has stopped working. It was working fine for maybe 6 months and suddenly has stopped working.
I tried previous kernel - didn't help, I also restored backup via Timeshift - also without result. I even started laptop with live mint image - also no sound.

Maybe sound card is dead, but how to confirm it ?

That helped. Thanks. I have sound back, but new problem has appeared. When I connect headset (audio jack) nothing is happening. Sounds is still via laptop speakers.
In Sound Settings only Speakers (and HDMI) is available.

try pulseaudio -k in terminal wait a few seconds. i regularly delete everything in .config/pulse ( i keep presets folder along with default.pa and client.conf, but that's my personal configs)

Unfortunately it didn't help. It's not a big problem, I started to use USB headset, but it is the first time when something like that happened. Do you know what could be a reason ?

It has finally started to work, with headset also. Here is full story, maybe someone will find it useful.

Yesterday, after speakers started to work I installed updates (one of my troubleshooting steps was to restore Timeshift backup from 13th June). Today I booted live mint from usb (as advised by trytip) and system was able to detect headset connected by audio jack. But when I restarted laptop with installed Mint, main problem (no sound) has re-appeared. So I removed all files from .config/pulse/, restarted system, but it didn't help. I removed it one more time and then run pulseaudio -k - but it didn't help either. So I tried to repeat all steps like I did yesterday - restored Timeshift backup from 13th June, deleted files from .config/pulse/ - but even if everything was exactly the same like yesterday, it didn't restore sound. In the end I loaded live Mint from usb one more time, and sound has appeared. What's more even headset connected to audio jack was detected in live session. So I restarted system and this time when booted from hard drive, sound started to work fine even with audio jack.
Will try to attach image with updates which are in queue now, but maybe I will hold on with installing them, as it is rather one of updates is causing this problem. Soon Mint 19 will be released so I plan to reinstall system anyway.

Thanks for help trytip.

Updates in current queue (after restoring timeshift backup from 13th June:

Small update:
Looks like problem is caused by new version of LTS kernel: 4.4.0-128.154
https://www.mail-archive.com/kernel-pac ... 88434.html
On my side I confirmed it by installing all pending updates, except kernel update, and everything works fine.
