No HDMI sound in Mint (but works in Ubuntu)

Post by zenthor2112 »

I am having problems getting sound sent from my ATI RX 470 gpu via HDMI to my Denon Receiver which is hooked by another HDMI to my LG TV.
There is no audio from my stereo speakers (or TV).
Video is sent fine.
Sound works fine in Ubuntu 18.04 and Windows 10
It does not work in Mint Clinamen or Elementary OS
I tried various "fixes" from google searches, most were editing grub or psaudio config files, but nothing helped.
I have not updated stock audio / video ATI drivers...I assume Mint uses the default install open source driver.
I have a FIIO headphone DAC hooked up by USB....it works perfect in all above OS's
I am not using my motherboard sound card in any way.

No fiddling with output audio settings help...HDMI output is silent, Spdif (my headphone DAC works perfect)

I am not sure what diagnostic info I can provide that will be helpful. I am hoping that the fact that it works fine in latest Ubuntu (and Windows 10) but not in Mint will be a clue as to what the problem might be.
I prefer to use Mint if possible.
Thanks!

Hi zenthor2112, and welcome to the forum. I've not had a lot of experience helping with HDMI sound, but I'll try my best to help you get sorted.

Can you paste back the results of the following commands run in the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-cards
This will let us see your hardware setup to help solve your issue. When you paste the results back here, please use the code button (looks like </>) to enclose your text so it retains the formatting making it easier to read.

The latest kernel for Mint 18.3 is 4.13, while Ubuntu 18.04 comes with 4.15. The audio will work with Mint 19, but until then you can use these kernels: https://github.com/M-Bab/linux-kernel-amdgpu-binaries
My recommendation however is to use Mint 19 beta.

Re: No HDMI sound in Mint (but works in Ubuntu)

Post by MrEen »

Hi zenthor2112. Can you now please post the output from this:

Code: Select all

cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
Also, please rerun pacmd list-sinks while your computer is playing something with sound.

This is with sound playing and HDMI Display Port HDA ATI HDMI selected under sound / device.
As I described, I see the picture on my PC monitor and my LCD TV but no sound can be heard on TV or through the speakers hooked up to my Denon Receiver.
Thanks!

Code: Select all

$ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec

Re: No HDMI sound in Mint (but works in Ubuntu)

Post by MrEen »

I was hoping your codec would have a workaround to add to alsa.conf but no such luck. And my research is showing very erratic results for that codec with Linux.

There's a real decent chance using the Update Manager > View > Linux kernels and installing the latest 4.15 kernel could get your sound working and would be my suggestion. As silfox2000 said, that's the kernel 18.04 comes with as default.

Good luck and please keep us informed.

EDIT: Oops, one thing worth trying for sure. If you have pavucontrol installed (use the Software Manager or apt install pavucontrol in the terminal if you don't) run it (in the terminal type pavucontrol) and go to the Configuration tab and set the Built-in Audio that just has analog inputs and outputs to Off.

It will. At least my RX460 works fine.
