Sound disappeared Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia

Post by Lakef » Mon Jun 25, 2018 5:37 am

I installed Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia and the sound worked fine. I looked for example on Youtube yesterday and I had sound. Yesterday I installed and used VirtualBox and ran a Linux Mint 18.3 system on it. I watched Youtube videos and I had sound. I shut down my computer for the night. This morning I had no sound. PulseAudio Volume Controller (pavucontrol) show moving "audiometer" when playing a sound file (MP3). Line Out is marked as plugged in. I have the speakers connected to Line Out to the motherboard via the computer back panel. Below is my system information.

First of all: upgrade your kernel to the latest one of either the 4.13 series or the 4.15 series. Your current kernel is insecure and vulnerable for Meltdown/Spectre.

Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels

After installing it, reboot and test your sound again. If need be, we'll take it from there.

I updated the kernel from 4.10.0-38 to 4.13.0-45, but unfortunately I still have no sound. The system is now:

Code: Select all

$ inxi -zxxxSMCGA
System: Host: HPD17 Kernel: 4.13.0-45-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.4.0)
Desktop: Cinnamon 3.6.6 (Gtk 3.18.9-1ubuntu3.3) dm: lightdm Distro: Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia
Machine: System: Gigabyte product: X170-Extreme ECC v: Default string
           Mobo: Gigabyte model: X170-Extreme ECC v: x.x Bios: American Megatrends v: F21e date: 01/11/2018
Chassis: Default string type: 3 v: Default string
CPU: Quad core Intel Xeon E3-1245 v5 (-HT-MCP-) cache: 8192 KB
           flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 vmx) bmips: 28032
           clock speeds: min/max: 800/3900 MHz 1: 799 MHz 2: 799 MHz 3: 799 MHz 4: 800 MHz 5: 800 MHz 6: 799 MHz
           7: 799 MHz 8: 800 MHz
Graphics: Card: Intel Device 191d bus-ID: 00:02.0 chip-ID: 8086:191d
Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa) Resolution: 3840x2160@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel HD Graphics P530 (Skylake GT2)
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 17.0.7 Direct Rendering: Yes
Audio: Card Intel Sunrise Point-H HD Audio driver: snd_hda_intel bus-ID: 00:1f.3 chip-ID: 8086:a170
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture v: k4.13.0-45-generic
As before, when playing MP3 music, the audiometer is moving and LineOut is marked as plugged in.

After the Kernel update, and the restart, the Update Manager complained that it could not update the APT cache "Please switch to another Linux Mint mirror. Your APT cache is corrupted", so I had to change the permissions of the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list from 600 to 644. After the change it worked fine to update APT cache.

I think there is some bug in Linux Mint 18.3, as the wrong permission is given to the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list sometimes.

In the update manager there is a level 4 upgrade of "linux-firmware". My current version is 1.157.13 and the new version is 1.157.19. Also, there is a level 4 update of "systemd" from 229-4ubuntu21 to 229-4ubuntu21.2 . Would it be good to update any of these in order to increase the possibility to make sound function again?

I now updated to kernel 4.15.0-23, but there is still no sound. It is really annoying, as the sound worked fine initially. It is very strange it stopped to function for apparently no reason. Clearly, Linux Mint 18.3 has functioning sound "out of the box" after installation. So the drivers should be working for my motherboard. What kind of bug can cause the sound to stop working in a system that initially works fine?

Can you post screenshots of all the tabs of pavucontrol?

You can use www.postimage.org for posting the screenshots.

Also: applying all level 4 updates is worth trying (reboot after doing so).

I have updated linux-firmware and systemmd with the update manager and rebooted. But there is still no sound output.

In the Driver Manager the processor microcode is version 3.20150425.1~ubuntu0.16.04.1 for my processor Intel Xenon E3-1245 v5.

P.S. Now I notice that the keyboard has stopped to produce correct stress marks. Before the diacritical marks ´ `^¨ were put above the next character selected on the keyboard, but now they appear directly (and not above the character).

Hi Lakef. Try deleting the files in ~/.config/pulse/ and log out/in or reboot and see if that fixes the sound issue.

Thank you! I tested to do as you said, and it worked! This is a field repair of the problem, but I think there are an underlying bug in Linux Mint 18.3 that causes the problem. I will set the issue as solved, but I hope the software developers will still solve the underlying issue/bug.

The error appeared again, and this time it did not help to delete the files in ~/.config/pulse/ and reboot. :(

I can see that things related to Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) was updated just before the error occurred. DRM GPUs of modern video cards, but I do not know if it also handles sound. For example the following packages were updated the 6th of July 2018:

2018-07-06 01:13:39 upgrade libdrm-common:all 2.4.83-1~16.04.1 2.4.91-2~16.04.1
2018-07-06 01:13:40 upgrade libdrm2:amd64 2.4.83-1~16.04.1 2.4.91-2~16.04.1
2018-07-06 01:13:40 upgrade libdrm-amdgpu1:amd64 2.4.83-1~16.04.1 2.4.91-2~16.04.1
2018-07-06 01:13:41 upgrade libdrm-intel1:amd64 2.4.83-1~16.04.1 2.4.91-2~16.04.1
2018-07-06 01:13:41 upgrade libdrm-nouveau2:amd64 2.4.83-1~16.04.1 2.4.91-2~16.04.1
2018-07-06 01:13:42 upgrade libdrm-radeon1:amd64 2.4.83-1~16.04.1 2.4.91-2~16.04.1

( Note: The list above was created by the following command: grep " upgrade " /var/log/dpkg.log )

It would be interesting to roll back (undo) the updates, if there is a safe and easy way to do it.

I have an Quad core Intel Xeon E3-1245 v5 processor with inbuilt Intel HD Graphics P530. The motherboard Gigabyte GA-X170-Extreme ECC has an Intel C236 chipset and a Creative® Sound Core 3D chip.

The Creative ® Sound Core 3D processor/chip on my Gigabyte GA-X170-EXTREME ECC motherboard is also called CA0132 as far as I understand:

Other than the left/right volume being set at 33% with base volume at 71%, I don't see anything wrong with those outputs.

First I'd try upping the volume to max and maybe reseat the speaker connection.

If still no sound, please post back the results of pacmd list-sinks again while something with sound is playing on the computer.

I plug in the headphones. In PulseAudio Volume control (pavucontrol) under the tab "Output Devices" the headphones appear as plugged in and the sound bar moves when playing music. But there is no sound in my headphones though. I test an other pair of headphones without improvement. :(

I think I never have had sound in the headphones. It has been a constant problem. Also, I have never had sound output on the "speakers out" connector on the back panel, but only in the "line out" connector. The "speakers out" connector is more correct in order to connect speakers than "line out", as it can deliver more power.
