HP Pavilion10 x2 - no sound or touchscreen

Post by Davdi » Mon Jun 25, 2018 6:30 pm

Mint 18.3, no sound, PulseAudio Volume control says 'Establishing connection to PulseAudio. Please wait...' but gets no further, however long I leave it.
alsamixer says 'Card: Intel HDMI/DP LPE Audio - This sound device does not have any controls'.
I suspect it's a driver missing as sound doesn't work in PCLinuxOS, Fedora or Arch.

Code: Select all

david @ david-HP-Pavilion-x2-Detachable inxi
CPU~Quad core Intel atom x5-Z8300 (-MCP-)
speed/max~1619/1840 MHz
Kernel~4.15.0-23-generic x86-64
Up~12 days
Mem~702.9/1915.9MB
HDD~1000.2GB(3.5% used)
Procs~203
Client~Shell
inxi~2.3.56
I've tried pulseaudio -k in a terminal, no effect. I can't post screenshots of pavucontrol tabs as it never gets started.

The touchscreen worked when I ran the live dvd from an external USB DVD drive, but not after installing mint.

Hi Davdi. See if this helps with the sound issue. In the terminal, type each of the following:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo alsa force-reload
Also, please use inxi -Fxz to get a better picture of your setup.

I tried removing/purging alsa/pulseaudio as suggested, puiseaudio mixer opens, I can see the audio appearing to play (the level bar is moving) but no sound, either via speakers or headphones.

I suspect it might be a driver problem/

Hi Davdi. It appears the only card recognized is HDMI/DP. I'm sure there's another in there but right now it's not getting detected. The "solutions" I've found might work for you, but I'm hesitant to offer them when we don't see a second card. It can be reversed without too much trouble so I'll leave it to you to decide:

In the terminal, type sudo touch /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf followed by gksudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf then add this one line:

Code: Select all

blacklist snd_hdmi_lpe_audio
Save the file and reboot.

Good luck.

Good idea, I tried it, but still no sound, I think that HDMI is the only audio.

Ok. I suggest looking in your BIOS to see if there are any audio setting available and not enabled. Also, if this is dual-boot with Windows, boot to Windows and check sound there, as well as try to find out anything audio related (codec, etc.) that you can. Be sure to completely shut down Windows when finished (don't reboot) before booting back into Mint.

I'm getting into a bad habit of looking for the hardest to find things first. Let's see the output of aplay -l (that's a lowercase l, not the number one) as well as pacmd list-sinks. That second command should be performed while something with sound is playing.

Let's see if this helps. Type the following into the terminal: pulseaudio -k followed by pulseaudio -D. I rather doubt it's going to be this easy, but what the heck, we can hope!

Here's the result:

And the volume control is greyed out on the XFCE panel.
Still no sound.

VLC says:

I read half way through your reply and thought we've solved it, thinking the greyed out icon means it's muted. Then I finished reading. :(

Based on "Connection refused", lets make sure you don't have a permissions problem. If the output from find $HOME ! -user $USER in the terminal gives a list of files, fix it with sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /home/$USER then do the pulseaudio -k followed by pulseaudio -D again and test your sound. If it's still not working, paste back the output of lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio".

Also, try testing with aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav then sudo aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav. Does either work?

And there's the problem. Most likely, you need to go into your BIOS and enable sound there. If it appears to already be enabled, try disabling/rebooting/re-enabling.

Good luck.

The Bios is very limited, there's no option to enable/disable sound. However, following the latest Kernel update, I now have a functioning touchscreen.

Hi Davdi. That lspci command I gave you should have returned something like this:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device ff01
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22
Memory at dc440000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable)
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel
Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel

According to this site, no output usually means BIOS settings need adjustment.

The only thing I can offer at this point is to look for an update for your BIOS. I found one here that MAY apply for you, but please investigate further to confirm.

It appears you may no longer have Windows on your system, so updating the BIOS may be a little more involved. I know there are people on this forum that have done it, using utilities such as Hirens boot cd, freedos, etc (I may have named them slightly incorrectly.)

While searching, I also found a number of people that had sound issues even in Windows with models like yours. Just so you know you're not alone.

Sorry I can't help more than that. Good luck!

...most likely you are affected by this. There's a possible workaround here.

Obviously, use Timeshift before trying such.
