NVIDIA GeForce 8200 and Mint 19

Post by milasx » Mon Jul 02, 2018 5:30 am

Hello,

I have just installed Mint XFCE 19 (fresh upgrade from 18) and I noticed with horror that the 304 drivers series is not showing anymore under the driver update app. Unfortunately only 340 and Nouveau are listed and on my system only the 304 series has ever worked.
Should I try to install the 304 version by download direct from NVIDIA?

Thanks!!!

Hello milasx,
I would add this ppa and that should put 304 into the driver manager. https://itsfoss.com/ubuntu-official-ppa-graphics/
or at least you can install 304 via synaptic. make sure you do an

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
after you add the ppa.
You can add the ppa in a terminal by copying this line into the terminal

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
Good Luck.

I've got an 8400 and stopped bothering with the nvidia drivers because they're sometimes a hassle - like right now - and didn't make any noticeable difference over nouveau (with full-screen videos, etc, but no heavy gaming).
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!

Nouveau crashes my system :(
I added the ppa sources and the 304 driver appeared but the installation fails because of dependencies:

Code: Select all

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

gvfs: Depends: libc6 (>= 2.14) but 2.27-3ubuntu1 is to be installed
Depends: libglib2.0-0 (>= 2.49.3) but 2.56.1-2ubuntu1 is to be installed
Depends: gvfs-daemons (>= 1.36.1-0ubuntu1) but 1.36.1-0ubuntu1 is to be installed
Depends: gvfs-libs (= 1.36.1-0ubuntu1) but 1.36.1-0ubuntu1 is to be installed
Depends: gvfs-common (= 1.36.1-0ubuntu1) but 1.36.1-0ubuntu1 is to be installed
libgtk-3-0: Depends: libgtk-3-common (>= 3.22.30-1ubuntu1) but 3.22.30-1ubuntu1 is to be installed
Depends: libwayland-egl1 but it is a virtual package
Depends: libx11-6 (>= 2:1.4.99.1) but 2:1.6.4-3 is to be installed
Depends: libxcomposite1 (>= 1:0.3-1) but 1:0.4.4-2 is to be installed
Depends: libxdamage1 (>= 1:1.1) but 1:1.1.4-3 is to be installed
Depends: libxi6 (>= 2:1.2.99.4) but 2:1.7.9-1 is to be installed
Depends: libxrandr2 (>= 2:1.5.0) but 2:1.5.1-1 is to be installed
nvidia-304: Depends: x11-common (>= 1:7.0.0) but 1:7.7+19ubuntu7 is to be installed
Depends: libgcc1 (>= 1:3.3) but 1:8-20180414-1ubuntu2 is to be installed
Depends: xorg-video-abi-23 but it is a virtual package

I wonder if it is solvable?

Many thanks

At this point think your options with 19 are limited. Did you use the nomodeset with nouveau? That may take care of the crashes.
If that does not work you may have to think about a newer video card or reverting to 18.3.

Thank you. Yes I am using nomodeset with Nouveau and I get limited resolution. Is there any hope in the medium term?

Well it looks like the problem is that the X server has been upgraded in Ubuntu 18.04 and Mint 19. and thus Nvidia 304 is no longer supported and is most likely the reason it was removed from the repositories. It's unlikely that Nvidia will update the driver at this point. Did you try 340 see if it would work at all?

I'm no expert but that's what it looks like to me.
As I said a newer video card if possible. But then the machine might be too old to be worth the effort. Or you could revert to 18.3 which will still be supported till 2021 I believe. Nvidia drivers are propitiatory and Nvidia does not release the code so they can not be modified by Mint or other linux distros. That's why in mint they are not installed by default. So it would be up to Nvidia to do the work to make them work, but the cards that use 304 are becoming too old for them to be bothered with I would suspect. Good luck in finding a solution.

Thank you. Yes I tried 340 with no luck. I will probably try to ask the NVIDIA team.

Looking at the NVidia forum I found this post: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi ... version-/2
the

Code: Select all

pci=nomsi
option on boot fixed the 340 driver for me.

The only glitch is that it goes to lower resolution when the screen locks and goes back to normal after login.

I am now trying to add the

Code: Select all

options nvidia NVreg_EnableMSI=0
to the driver configuration. I tried adding it to

Code: Select all

/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia_340.conf
but it did not work.

Any suggestions?

Re: NVIDIA GeForce 8200 and Mint 19 [SOLVED]

I managed to fix this - I actually entered

Code: Select all

options nvidia_340 NVreg_EnableMSI=0
while it should have been as I wrote below (I checked with lsmod):

Code: Select all

options nvidia NVreg_EnableMSI=0

At this point my only issue is with the login screen going to low resolution.
I will make a different post for this issue.
