Hi frostymusic, and welcome to the forum. Please open a terminal window and paste in the following commands while something with sound is playing on the computer:

Code: Select all

aplay -l

Code: Select all

pacmd list-sinks
Then copy the output and paste it back here. Enclose the results in-between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

Re: Linux Mint 19 Mate No Sound

Post by MrEen »

Right now, the HDMI card is default for sound. I am guessing that is not how you're trying to play sound.

My suggestion is to install and run PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol.) On the Configuration tab you'll have 2 Built-in Audio profiles. Set the one that doesn't have HDMI options to Analog Stereo Duplex, then play something with sound. If you don't hear it, move to the Playback tab and change where it's playing to by clicking on the box above the volume bar.

Hope that helps.

Hi There,
I wanted post an update. Looking at Pulse Audio Control as you had suggested, I found one sound device. This was after I disabled the onboard sound in the BIOS.
I am not using HDMI for sound, I have a 2.1 speaker setup plugged into my sound card. Looking again at Pulse I see one device that being the CM8888 card which I want to have working. BTW I did the latest updates which included the Kernel. I see the card, I looked at the tabs you suggested and they are set as you have recommended. I play music but get nothing through speakers, I don't get the system sounds either.

The one thing I don't see is the Playback tab. Did you go there and change the little box above the volume bar to the CM8888?

What I'm talking about only shows up when you are playing something. Were you playing something with sound when you opened that tab?

Yes, like that. I'm afraid your pavucontrol is newer than mine and there've been some changes.

Try this, so I know it works. In the terminal type aplay -D hw:2,0 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

Did you hear a voice saying, "Front center" from your system?

Well that's weird. According to your output above hw:2,0 is a valid option. Maybe try changing the output on the Configuration tab of pavucontrol to Digital instead of Analog and see if that works. The corresponding aplay would be aplay -D hw:2,1 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav after the change.

EDIT: Also try after removing the space after -D, so aplay -Dhw:2,0 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav or aplay -Dhw:2,1 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

Neither worked as expected. I tried the digital out, and when I select it, it changes to digital/SPDIF

I think I just figured it out. You said you disabled the onboard sound after running the commands earlier. Let's get a fresh copy of the aplay -l output please.

It is s PCIe card, connected to line out to speakers. I have used this program before Audacity and this is what shows up in the sound selection. Now it seems to show hw:1,1 and when I modified your input suggestion, this was what I got:

home@home-System-Product-Name:~$ aplay -D hw:1,1 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono

Audacity is showing Analog which would be 1,0 (1,1 is Digital.)
