[Solved] Wifi issue, Linux Mint 19

Post by ricdoy44 » Sun Jul 15, 2018 2:12 pm

So I am trying to setup a wifi connection on my HP Laptop. It came with Windows 10. Now its running Linux Mint 19 off the hardware and windows is gone. I'm trying to set up a wifi connection, but having trouble getting the network controller up and running. Here are some diagnostics I've run to get some information. I am ultra knew, and am not sure where to go from here. I have the laptop hooked up to a wired connection now, and everything in the update manager is showing up to date. The Driver Manager is just empty. It seems my access is being denied to my wireless card, and I'm not sure how to fix it. It was fully functional with Windows.

Open a terminal window, enter

Code: Select all

lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net; rfkill list
Better to copy and paste with mouse or touchpad

Secure boot was disabled. Had to do that to get Linux up and running, but I did see an option to remove all of the secure boot keys which I also did, since I had the option to restore them if I needed to.

If the wifi isn't working see the wireless script link in my signature and post results

modprobe: FATAL: Module rtl8723de not found in directory /lib/modules/4.15.0-24-generic

I'm really impressed with the system and really enjoy it. Everything else seems to be running smoothly, and I'm having a good time learning to operate it.

Did you run these commands one line at a time and reboot

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install dkms git build-essential
git clone -b extended https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new.git
sudo dkms add ./rtlwifi_new
cd rtlwifi_new
make
sudo make install

Reboot successful. Is there more terminal magic I can use to check if it worked?

Lets do a quick test and see if this is an HP model with only one antenna wire

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe -r rtl8723de
sudo modprobe rtl8723de ant_sel=1
iwlist scan | egrep -i 'SSID|level'
sudo modprobe -r rtl8723de
sudo modprobe rtl8723de ant_sel=2
iwlist scan | egrep -i 'SSID|level'
Post output
