Cursor freeze on Mint 19

Post by drwho »

Cursor freeze (only the cursor) -
I have a Lenovo 320 with a Synaptics touchpad.
I am running Linux Mint 19 with Mate desktop. Every day or two, the touchpad stops working. Everything else still works and I can use a USB mouse. I have not noted any commonality between these occurrences - It doesn't seem to matter which apps are open or on focus, whether or not the browser is started, or what I am doing at the time. It has happened in the email program and the e-reader as well as the browser. It doesn't appear to depend on system resources, because ot has happened with only one small application running. A temporary fix to restart the cursor without having to lose any work is ctrl-alt-del This brings up a dialog box with four options: use the left arrow key (which still works along with the rest of the keyboard) to navigate to the "suspend" option, then click it using the keyboard enter key. This suspends it. Tap the power key to resume from suspend, and everything, including your work is back to how it was before the cursor froze. In a nutshell - suspending then unsuspending temporarily fixes the cursor freeze problem.

Just an edit -
The title should be 'Touchpad freeze on Mint 19" since the entire touchpad, including the clicker buttons stops working

Your laptop may be too new for LM 19's default kernel 4.15.

Had the same issue on my Yoga-720. Solved it with the help of the mint release notes https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_tara_cinnamon.php
section Touchpad drivers -> remove the synaptics driver to revert to the libinput default.

The synaptics driver somehow messes up the touchpad.

Yes, I replaced the xorg driver with libinput, and there is improvement, but it still freezes every day or rwo

FYI - This problem is still present after installation of the new kernel 4.15.0-29.

Don't know if this is related, but the earphone jack stopped working. The same (temporary) fix that I use to restore cursor movement (suspend, then unsuspend), also worked for this problem.
P.S. Installing kernel 4.15.0-30 had no effect on the cursor freeze problem.

I have the same problem with the touchpad randomly stopping to work, although I'm still on Linux Mint 18.3 on my Asus N550JV laptop.

I found I can restore touchpad movement by either disabling and reenabling the touchpad with the Fn+F9 hardware keyboard combination, or by switching to another virtual workspace (strg+alt+right/left), although this will not restore the two finger scrolling function. For that I have to suspend the system and wake it up again just as @drwho observed.

Wow, thank you, I had the same problem with Asus on mint 18, and it worked with Fn+F9!

Hello.
I have the same problem described by drwho.
I have a Lenovo E31-70 and since one update of Mint 19.1, in less than 30 or 40 min using the touchpad, this suddenly freezes and then there are different solutions:
- Restart. But not always works again after rebooting.
- Suspend. The same that restarting, usually works but some times after 3 suspensions still doesn't work.
- Disabling/Enabling Touchpad (Fn + F6). Some times it works at the first time and other after 5 or more Disabling/Enabling doesn't comes to life.
I haven't found a pattern for fail neither to revive it and is going me crazy because with other OS's doesn't happen.
I have tried to change the libinput xorg driver for the synaptics one but doesn't change the behaviour.

Please help.

Thanks :-)

I forgot to say that changing to the original kernel of mint 19.1 doesn't change anything. I don't think is a kernel issue.

I am experiencing similar problems on an Acer Aspire 1, with Mint 19.1 and kernel 4.15.0-20-generic. Based on posts above, I experimented with function combinations, and looks like Fn+F6 turns on and off for me. Next time my cursor freezes after suspending, I'll try Fn_F6 a few times, and see what happens.

I am almost disappointed that there has been no cursor freezing since I posted. Perhaps recent updates have solved the problem... (?)

That's what I thought after an update of the system (which included idev) but was only a question of time and now I have to depend on an external mouse because most of the time fails since boot.
Maybe this is not the place to post this issues but at least I would thank if anybody could tell me the place to explain the issue in order to fix it and improve the code.
Thank you very much :-)

I have had these issues and tried posting them in a couple of spots on the forums before finding this, and so far no one has replied at all. I seem to be able to trigger this problem at will now by simply making a left-click with the touchpad. Suspend, Restart, or Shut-down and Reboot all work to unfreeze, until I left-click again and cause it to freeze. USB mouse still works so I can at least use my laptop. My information:

Lenovo 2nd Gen X1 Carbon running 19.1 Tessa Xfce.
Running Kernel 4.15.0-48-generic and Xfce 4.12.3.
When I type in grep -iA2 touchpad /proc/bus/input/devices I get the response:
N: Name="SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio1/input0
S: Sysfs=/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input5

I have tried switching synaptics to libinput but to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

my device: grep -iA2 touchpad /proc/bus/input/devices

N: Name="SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio1/input0
S: Sysfs=/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input21

I still have to travel everywhere with an external mouse. Now, most of the times that I boot, the touchpad doesn't work. I can revive it disabling and enabling it several times (till 10 times or more) with Fn+F6
I need a solution!! Please help! :-/
Thanks and regards :-)

Hello Kok0.

As Mint is based on Ubuntu, I suggest visiting the Ubuntu forums in order to find out whether someone posted the same touchpad problem there and whether a solution has been found. A similar good place to visit is Askubuntu.
Sorry. But this is the smartest piece of advice which I can give.

Cheers
Karl
