mobile usb modem

Postby geobahneanu » Wed Jun 10, 2009 4:01 am

Hello,
First of all, I want to apologize for my not very good english :oops:. My problem is a mobile usb modem named AMOI U2000, with a Orange SIM card. I can't make it work on Gloria, whatsoever... I tryed different approaches, but the modem is seen by the system as a storage module not as a usb modem. Is there something that I could do to make it work?
Best regards and thank you for your wonderful work on linuxmint!

usb_modeswitch converts storage device into modem

Postby pdc_2 » Wed Jun 10, 2009 6:06 am

your provider has some details on their website; they mention linux, and curiously say only works on the Eee pc

http://www.orange.ro/support/modems/option-225.html

and sounds like they sell the Eee 1000H with Xandros

http://www.orange.ro/support/laptops/as ... c1000.html

.......... to address your problem more ......... seems like these modems are storage devices initially for windows software, and then when software installed convert to being USB modems: linux has ways of identifying as recognising as modem, and not storage device;

this guy wrote a script for the Eee

http://www.greenhughes.com/content/huaw ... g-easy-way

and he has a package for the Eee that turns off the storage recognition; I thought the later Ubuntu did that automatically; if you are happy to tinker you could download his package; it is a debian package; install; see if it helps you use your modem; (I would attempt to configure on Network Manager icon); I guess you delete package if it does not help

you are basically installing a copy of usb_modeswitch

http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/

but the Hughes-Greene package automates the whole process; but if you pick through the draisberghof link, it tells you something of how it works;

I'll take some time to try it in the afternoon... however, I have a Asus X55Sv laptop with Linuxmint Gloria/Windows 7 in dual boot... in win, the modem works just fine (driver is on it) but I want to make it work in linux, because I want to quit win for good...
anyway, I'll be back with news. thank you very much for your quick answer!
