Laptop does not shut down

Post by JasonDougen »

I recently installed Linux Mint Tara (Cinnamon) and have encountered the following issue:
My laptop does not shut down properly. It gets stuck showing the dark screen with the Linux Mint logo, showing 'progress' with the dots underneath it, however it would stay in that screen until the battery rans out.

It did not happen initially, then it started happening occasionally and now it goes on all the time. Please help me :) Thank you for your time

Did you try command mode?

Code: Select all

 sudo shutdown 0
or

Code: Select all

 sudo init 0

Press Esc on that screen to see what's holding it up. Some service will be stuck in a timeout loop.

I have the same issue, unfortunately it seems to be hanging on "power-off" - I don't know if that counts as a service...

[OK] Starting Shuts down the "live" preinstalled system cleanly.
[OK] Reached target Final Step.
Starting Power-Off...

Mine actually started doing this on version 18.3 after a kernel update (I don't recall which one, sorry) and I tried completely wiping the machine and installing version 19. Same thing occurs; so I guess something changed with the kernel that doesn't play well with older Dell laptops...

I've let it sit for about half and hour and nothing happens. Haven't waited for battery to die or anything like that but that seems kinda pointless.

Might well be due to the kernel, the 4.15 series seems to be causing ACPI-related issues, which could be the case here. You could try another kernel series or maybe the acpi=force GRUB boot option will help you if your device is really old. Please make your own thread, include your inxi -Fxz output, if you need to discuss this further.

Could you try the commands suggested by deepakdeshp in a full-screen console (e.g. CTRL+ALT+F1) and seeing if there's a file it can't access during shutdown? That might reveal something useful, as well as the commands gm10 suggested; in particular the inxi -Fxz output. I have a similar issue on one of my Mint installs due to a missing system file (two, actually: init.depend.stop I think is one of them); will get round to sorting it at some point.

In the meantime I shut down or reboot by holding CTRL+ALT & then, with a short pause in between, pressing R E I S U O; substituting the final O with B for reboot rather than shutdown.

Could I also suggest you try the same, but post in your new thread as gm10 recommended, as your issue may have a different cause & your hardware & setup is not likely to be identical. :)
