Game controller not recognised properly

I've set up mint on an old PC and I intend to use it to run RetroPie.

After a lot of messing I've finally got the game controller recognised when I'm in terminal.
sudo jstest /dev/input/js0
but nothing else is recognising it, I've installed jstest-gtk and QJoyPad but neither of these can see it. Does anyone have any ideas what I've done wrong
